I thought they were only playable in the ‘Eye for an Eye’ side campaign as Khazrak against Boris Todbringer, on a small map featuring only the Empire and other Beastmen, plus the odd Greenskin tribe? I’ve come across them in the main campaign map as Dwarfs but I don’t think there’s a way to play them yourself in the main campaign

you can play them on the regular campaign, always have been able to.

Having said that, I think that they've always worked best in that little side campaign as it was tailored to them. In the main campaign/mortal empires they're just a generic horde faction raising cities and not doing much interesting besides that.

I played 30 turns of Kazhrak yesterday, I like the Beastmen so far.

Played through Oxyotl's vortex campaign yesterday. I've got to say, it's easy like some have said, but also fun. Bouncing around the map assassinating enemies is cool, and being able to teleport back to your bases is extremely useful. However, I did get charged by two Skaven factions and Taurox during the later part of the campaign, and they destroyed like half my cities before I could catch them, lol!

Turn 120 with the Beastmen now, and still having fun.
The humans make this almost too easy, fighting Chaos and each other instead of me.

Just be glad the Ai doesn't gang up on you, that's what ruins most of my campaigns; suddenly being attacked by 4 factions at once, all of whom are sending 3-4 doomstacks at the same time :p

I just finished my Khazrak campaign (long) in turn 180.
    That was fun!

Next up: Dwarves I think. Have never played them.

I indeed startet a Thorek campaign.
If you play Mortal Empires you start down in the south near Kroq-gar and the Tomb Kings.
You can also play on the Vortex map, then you start in Lustria.

    Edit: Thorek, not Thorgrimm. Corrected.

I might have made an error and chose the Mortal Empires map. Grimgor confederated everyone and their mother already, throwing stack after stack at multiple settlements, and I lack the speed to fight on two fronts. Losing territory and the Lizardmen are a bit slow to help me.
Might become a short campaign. :D

Yeah, Greenskins can steamroll pretty easily if you don't keep them down.

mwha, if he keeps throwing stacks at you you at least get some income from it :p

Honestly that's one of the weirdest ecomic mechanics this game has. A steady stream of armies you can crush is such a ridiculously good source of income.

Sadly I am not very good at this game, so every stack leaves me with a crippled army and all money goes into rebuilding it before the next stack.

But it seems that I am making progress. I am slooowly making my way north. The Lizardmen are great allies this time. Old Kroq is fighting the Greenskins in the east.

That's always my biggest debate in a Kroq-Gar campaign. Do I go north and try to wipe out Grimgor's Ardboyz before they take over everything? Or do I take out the Tomb Kings and Brettonians in the desert first and deal with the Orks once I've gotten multiple armies and high-tier units...

    Man that was a campaign!
It took me 120 turns to finally kill the Greenskins.
After that I fought the Skaven and Hag Graef.

After 166 turns I had everything finished.
    Lots of Alliances too.

Sadly some of the Dwarven units are so expensive and slow to recruit (or it takes too long to get the buildings) that I didn't have the time to ever use them. A halfway experienced Lord can buff those low tier units pretty well so they can compete.

But I am still tempted to play another Dwarf campaign to try out stuff like those Gyrocopters or Flamethrower dudes.

    My stacks mostly consist of
Lord, Runesmith, and a Thain or Engineer
    4-6 Warriors or Longbeards
2 artillery pieces, usually just grudge throwers
2-4 Longbeards or Miners or Giant Slayers to get some armor piercing)
5 crossbows (either version is fine)
1-2 Mournfang Cavalry do wonders for Dwarves btw.

I also really like the runes and crafting system. Feels a bit like an RPG.

meh, you're not missing much, the higher tier dwarf units act more or less the same as the lower ones. Just with better stats.

The gyrocopters I always found to be very dissapointing in terms of firepower. But that's somethng I've noticed in general about flyers that like to stay up and shoot at the ground. None of those ever really feel great.

It's still fun to give a Morrowind welcome with fireleech terradons though.

Terradon Riders (preferably with Bolas but they can do without) pull their weight for me, except against armies with a lot of shooting since they are squishy.

But yeah I know that problem, those wood elf eagle riders for example didn't do a whole lot the last time I played them.

Meanwhile I am trying to save my old Kroq-gar campaign that I quit playing some time ago, and... gah, Greenskins messing me up again.

I might not finish that one. They keep running away in the mountains, just using the underways to get past me and destroying my settlements. I just cannot maintain that many armies and Lizardmen garrisons just don't work against them it seems.
...speaking of which... I have the feeling that Lizardmen garrisons suck anyway, compared to others. Not sure why, probably it's just me.

It is not just you, but to be fair I find that basically all garrisons suck.

At least it's a fair treatment. A thing that cannot be said for AoS faction terrains...
