To me, it makes perfect sense. First, because the best time to introduce it would be when hype from the game dies down and needs a refresh, hence TOW...

    But...

I'm to the point now where I don't think they're GOING to release it. I think they brought out the idea as a reaction to Kings of War 3rd ed, as an attempt to save face. I'm still going to keep collecting minis for my Orcs and Goblins army, but I will believe in TOW coming out when it actually comes out.

Not if you want to attract new customers. Total War Warhammer extends far beyond the miniature war gaming hobby. I'm sure a lot of Warhammer hobbyists play it, but so do a lot of other people who have never played a miniature wargame in their life. Imagine these people really get interested in the setting and want to jump into the miniature wargame it's based on... only to find that it is no longer being supported. AoS looks and feels completely different from the Total War Warhammer setting, so that is a no go. On the other hand, if TOW had been made available, then GW might be able to capture a lot of new players directly off the success of the Total War game. Wait too long though, and these potential players move on to other things.

I think the better strategy would be to allow TOW to work synergistically with Total War and tap into a more mainstream market.

If you think about it, it's not really that sketchy...

You guys keep framing TOW as a "new game" and this is a big misconception.

All they really need to do is to re-release already existing models from 8th edition fantasy, a rulebook (not even really new as it seems to be heavily based on 7th), and a couple starter boxes. We will probably see a few reworks from models older than 7th edition, but that's it.

Now, they already had 4 years for that... seems like a fairly large amount of time to me.

Yeah, that's why I'm growing skeptical that it is coming out at all.

I really wouldn't read too much into that. A lot of people did that model up as a display piece and mounted it on a non-standard base for a better scenic mounting.

I got to say, I'm disappointed in the base size change.

I used to attend competitive events where all models require adhering to strict rules and part of me was hoping I could jump back into Warhammer Fantasy (WH: TOW) with my existing army and maybe attend an event. But this news basically means I'll either not have that option to attend, or I'll have to use movement trays for my whole army (including my SKIRMISHERS).

I know the newer GW models aren't made rank-friendly, but they still could be.

Glad to see Bretonnia given some attention.

From a Lizardmen perspective, I think TOW would be a great opportunity for GW to flesh out the Southlands a bit more.

    Someone posted this on discord

Hi folks, got this from someone who was in the Q&A after the preview in case this is of interest. Compiled all the bits they posted.

    The Old World Q&A

    - No plans for mordheim yet, but if things go well maybe
    - Document before release showing base size. Most base sizes go up, end of Warhammer fantasy the models were already starting to overhang. Cavalry get bigger bases, most infantry go bigger.
    - There's rules for chaos dwarfs, but not a faction for focus and won't be getting new models for a few yrs at least
    - Sounds like they're not simplifying stuff, said it's not the best way to start on your wargaming journey. Said their won't be starter box like the HH one
    - Someone came out and said "so there's no starter box??", He stood shaking his head
    - They'll make boxes to make it easy to jump in (sounds like army boxes?)
    - Army books - focus is on factions in the old world. They'll then reassess whether that's the way the should carry on. No promise of an army book for every faction.
    - May have upgrades compatible with old kits, but far more likely to get new kits
    - Dogs of war, no in initial focus
    - Lizardmen won't get a re release of old kits. New kits + a document showing base size needed. New stuff for AoS unlikely to be ported back to WHF. No re release of old kits (eh old saurus), but will give base sizes to use the new ones
    - Cathay in the very far future
    - "what's the best thing we can do to prepare?" "Paint your minis, but don't put them on bases unless you're very confident"
    - New units for bretonnia that we haven't seen before
    - No plans to bring back the old forgeworld monsters at the moment, but there should be rules for them

So I like that Chaos Dwarfs, Cathay and DoW will be in there according to this. The rest is kind of a mixed bag.

Ah I misread that. Though the "in initial focus" doesn't seem to immediately discount them. I can see them having rules as part of a Tilean, Estalian or Border Princes faction.

So if I get this correctly:
-They wont re-release the latest fantasy range for lizardmen (at the end of 8th)
-They dont pretend for us to use the new Seraphon for TOW
-They will eventually release new lizardmen kits specifically for TOW
