The WETA crew did a lot of practical special effects for the movies, as becomes readily apparent at Hobbiton. Whenever a scene involving a hobbit near their hobbit hole is featured, the relevant hobbit hole is scaled up in size to make the actors look hobbit-sized, whereas the remainder that show up in the background vary in size from actual hobbit size to even smaller for an illusion of depth.

Suffice to say that they really love their illusory forced perspective effects.

Interior scenes were filmed elsewhere, with maybe the exception of any taken at the Green Dragon.
