An amusing fact about WW2, lovingly found while perusing TVTropes on a page about spears: When Winston Churchill sent a letter to the War Office In 1942 to step up arms production, saying, "every man must have a weapon of some kind, be it only a mace or pike", the War Office misinterpreted the message and produced about 250,000 pikes for the British Home Guard. Though early on in the creation of the Home Guard, this would have made sense, as there weren't enough rifles to equip everybody, by 1942 this equipment shortage had been somewhat solved, and several people in the Home Guard and parliament wondered what the hell the War Office was doing. By that time, the Home Guard and those serving in it expected better equipment - but it would be amusing to think of what had happened had the Germans invaded in that very moment. Thankfully, they never did.
It was a good job bombing all those small boats and landing craft the Germans were marshaling in the channel ports.
Indeed. Still, Churchill was pretty insistent on making sure the Germans pay for every inch of British soil they took in the event of an invasion. I just don't think the Germans would have known what to make of being assailed by pike and shot like it's 1618 all over again.
Too little too late. I didn't go as far as to throw my gillette razors away but when I wore them out I switched brands. I only shave about half the year, I keep a beard for the November through May, so I also stopped using Proctor and Gamble toothpaste (Crest), Proctor and Gamble detergent (Tide), and Proctor and Gamble dish soap (Dawn). The accountant in me wonders if Proctor and Gamble is playing us all. Spoiler: Bla Bla Bla accountant musing They say they made record profits, they could be using cookie jar accounting to cook the books to avoid a stock drop, but if they really did make record profits, writing 8 billion dollars of good will is a good idea. Goodwill is intangible. It's not that different from losing 8 billion dollars of monopoly money but they can still underwrite their profits by 8 billion dollars and thus pay less taxes. So Goodwill isn't purely imaginary. When Proctor and Gamble bought Gillette years ago, they paid a price for the value of Gillette's land, equipment, buildings, inventory, etc and then they paid more. The "more" is the goodwill, which is in theory the value of the brand. It's sort of meaningless if they aren't selling Gillette. In this case "Everything is worth what it's purchaser will pay for it." With or without this stupid ad, if the Gillette brand is ever sold again, the goodwill would not be exactly the same. Either way, I avoid purchasing from Proctor and Gamble whenever it is feasible to do so now.

The commercial really isn't too bad. I am not certain what parts of it came off as offensive. I can see how it was a bad marketing move. I can also see how isn't in their purview to address the issues it attempted to highlight. However, as a man, I honestly don't know which part/s are suppose to be offensive to me.
It came down to how the message was extrapolated by its receptive audience, especially the vocal minority that saw it as an attack and raised an uproar in response that others followed along with. This is only made worse by the fact that we live in a post-truth era where feelings are treated with greater reverence than facts, and lies of omission are the norm when it comes to pushing for societal change.
Imagine a commercial that attacked women as Gillette attacked men. It would NEVER happen (even though there are just as many horrible women out there as there are horrible men). Regardless of political stances, it probably isn't a great business decision to crap on your primary consumer base. Other companies should take note and learn from Gillette's 8 billion dollar boo boo. We may have taken a loss on the whole Captain Marvel nonsense, but I'm marking this one down in the win column. Get Woke, Go Broke! #boycott
No, I was talking hypothetical if the brand was sold not destroyed. It's not feasible for a stupid ad to literally destroy a brand. Gillette is a very big company. If the sales volume fell by half it would still be one of the top sellers of shavers. I loathe being in a post-truth era... Someone made a commercial like that just to prove a point. Youtube took the video down and demonetized the channel that made it. Nike is doing well with woke advertisment campaigns. That makes sense because Nike's customer base leans towards young people and SJW causes. I don't agree with them but that doesn't matter, I wasn't one of their customers. Chickfile has political leanings in the other direction that I disagree with. They are doing strong economically because their customer base is pretty socially Conservative. I don't agree with them, but that doesn't matter, I wasn't one of their customers All things considered, if I was running a business I would not let any of my political views slip and tell my employees to do likewise. In most cases I can at least understand the rationale behind views I disagree with. One exception. Ocean's 8 did okay. It didn't break any records but it made a decent profit. It's the best counter example to Get Woke, go broke. Ghostsbusters 2016 was a dumpster fire. Going woke doesn't actually weaken a media franchise. If the writing sucks, the movie, TV show, comic, or novel will suck. Being woke does not have a causational relationship with being a dumpsters but the two seem to have a correlational relationship. I would watch it!
