It is probably in the magic weapons section of the main rulebook, I'm not sure, but your opponent is definitely right in that if you take a magic weapon you must use it, you cannot choose to use a mundane weapon instead. Therefore taking a magic and a mundane weapon on the same model is just a waste of points.

There is but one exception to this which further proves that your opponent was right; Bretonnians have a special rule that allows them to charge with a mundane lance then switch to a magic weapon in subsequent rounds of combat.

@slannfrog, unit champions must fight with the same weapons as the rest of the unit.

it says under the rules for magical weapons that you cant take a magic item of the same class and a mundane one-if you take the enchanted sheld, you cant take the normal one, same for a sword, if you take a magic weapon, you cant take a normal weapon too.

for my saurus, I have the originals that came in the old starter game. they came with hand weapon in their hands and for some reason another hand weapon on their leg. I cut the one in their hands off, added 17 penny nails (perfect size). Vioala, a hand weapon and spear.(and shields too oc)

I'll add a little to what was already said.

The spears are definitely worth it. It allows you to use them when needed, or use HW and shield when you want the extra save. Totally worth it!

If units are allowed to add a weapon to their equipment, they may use either weapon. If it states "replaces' or "exchanges" they must use the upgraded choice. This is clear in the unit's description. Example, "Unit may upgrade to spears" or "Unit may exchange bows for spears", the unit only has one weapon option. "Unit may be equipped with spears", the unit keeps their default equipment selection AND has spears.

A champion is no different from the rest of the unit, so unless I am very wrong, he will fight with whatever the rest of the unit uses, even in a challenge. The only exception to this is if he has a magic weapon, like the HE and DE are commonly equipped. In which case he must use the magic weapon, he has no choice.

If characters purchase a magic weapon or armor, they may not buy a mundane one also. There are a couple exceptions to this, mainly the Bretonnians with their lances and the Wood Elves with their bows.

    Hope this helps some!

In the lizardmen codex, under scar vet(as well as skink chief, oldblood, etc.) it say Weapons; and under that it says the options(Spear/Great wep, etc.). Right in between, though, it says "(one choice only)". So, no you cannot take extra hand wep, great weapon, and spear.
    Although that would be awesome.
Also:Chariot/warmachine slayer. Scar-vet w/ great sword/Jaguar charm and watever else. Str7 w/ an effective 28" charge (just make sure you use the charm at the end of magic, so your opponent doesn't have many or any dispell dice left)

Let me just stop right there by saying that there is no such thing as a LM Codex. Sorry, in WHFB, they're called Armybooks.

While you are right about the 'one choice only' rule, I really don't understand why you quoted me on something that was overlooked by several other posters, thereby resurrecting a thread. Care to elaborate?

*edit* Rulebooks - Armybooks (really should avoid posting when I am half asleep)
    Bad grammar, uggh

But yeah this discussion is pretty much wrapped up with everything answered now. Best leave it that way

Ya but the way i did it seemed to take too much time and green stuff per model.

when i first made my saurus regiments it was before the new Lm book came out and i thought that spears were useless. I made what almost looks like a bow quiver and glued it to the side of a saurus and put a spear in it, and to my surprise it actually looked quite good. If you plan on doing this i would trim the arm off or cut above the arm when placing the spear in its holder as it looks kinda too long.
