Its probably because anything remotely Japanese related has to do with anime right? While I have watched some anime before (both versions of Fullmetal Alchemist come to mind) I would hardly call it my favorite genre of TV/movies, as I am a bigger fan of Star Trek, and also am a fan of spaghetti westerns. I am definitely a fan of Japanese history though, that has been the case since I took a class on Japanese history in college. I especially enjoyed the Sengoku era leading up to the Edo period (where I have set my army) because of all the conflict and interesting stuff that happened in the period. Then again I am also a fan of Chinese, Medieval European, and of course Mayan history, all of which I have either taken classes on or read tons of books on. I see your weeb alert, and raise you one painted samurai army! For the greater good after all Western Army: Ukita Clan: Ishida Clan: Kobayakawa Clan: Eastern Army, currently just the Ii Clan:
I am happy with how this army has turned out so far, just about enough to do an actual Warhammer battle (with all of these guys on the same side of course) minus artillery! Here are the bandits: And of course, Samurai Jack: Hope you enjoyed them Spoiler: extra photos
Nothing specifically new today, but I did (finally) update the index to this thread, and added a sweet title picture to the first post! Spoiler Clockwise from top left: Knight of the Temple (Knight Errant) Samurai Bandit the Leper King (Grail Reliquae) Templar Marine Sergeant Samurai Jack Ork Pilot Alien Scum and Weirdboy (directing air traffic )
Just found something interesting mate - I remember you saying you were disappointed to see that the new company that took over Test of Honour scrapped many of Warlord's kits to start making their own, but I've discovered Warlord's been resurrecting some of these kits for use in their fantasy game Warlords of Erehwon, including the Bandits and Brigands set you really enjoyed painting: The full collection of these resurrected sets can be seen here: https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/warlords-of-erehwon/erehwon-samurai
Wow they have made a bunch of changes to this next evolution of the Test of Honour line! I really did enjoy the bandit minis, at some point I want to get my hands on the ninja box as well. Maybe some of the monks in the future too. Warlords of Erehwon is a rank-and-flank square-bases game right? Curious if there is a whole new "samurai" faction now.
I think Warlords of Erehwon is more like Middle Earth and AoS in terms of unit structure, but it looks like it has tactical gameplay and is closer to Fantasy in terms of aesthetics and lore - indeed I think most Fantasy factions could be used in it, including Bretonnians as a Knightly Retinue army. Yes, it now has a Samurai faction, the rules for whom can be found here: https://www.warlordgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Erehwon-Samurai-List.pdf
Hey that list is pretty good, more than covers all the models I currently have. I will need to go through the other army lists and see what matches my current forces, the game seems like it could work pretty well with a simple skirmish force.
Random find, but as a big fan of all things [ork + flying], I got a big laugh from the Deff Skwadron comic. Art style makes it a bit hard to understand exactly what is going on, but I think that is just part of the point
Its been a full year since I have been able to do any miniature projects, so here is my first one! I made some test multi-bases for my samurai heroes (Perry and Steel Fist Miniatures). Very much work in progress but its a good start to get things moving. Still need to finish painting these guys. For this next year my goal is to not buy (too many) more miniatures and work on the boxes of sprues I have lying around the gameroom.
Basically complete with the first of my new daimyo, Honda Tadakatsu. Need to work on lighting (and painting skills of course ) but here he is on foot. This is the Perry Miniature version that comes with Tokugawa as part of his retinue. Next up is Honda Tadakatsu on his warhorse, armed with his gigantic spear, the Dragonfly Cutter. His two bannermen retainers: The freehand banner was a pain; Japanese heraldry is so intricate! But I don't have any water transfers for printing my own designs yet, so this will have to do Spoiler: Honda Banners inspiration Banner color came right off of this from the Samurai Archives: ...and this picture: I also tried to model Honda himself (the mounted version) off of this ukiyo-e artwork Also I have my (still WIP) Ishida Mitsunari and his bannermen: Bannermen are done, they all just need to have their bases finished. Cheers
Tokugawa and his retinue are 95% complete, just got to finish the basing!!! Spoiler: Tokugawa Ieyasu inspiration In truth I used the Perry miniatures from the catalogue as my initial inspiration: Only thing I really could NOT do was the TINY TINY TINY tokugawa heraldry on the helmets and breastplates. How do you even paint that small!! Also here is some artwork of his armor, which has some Western armor-making materials in it, hence the iron breastplate:
Your fine samurai remind me of my pile of shame, including a lot of samurai from a kickstarter long ago (Kensei by Zenit miniatures)... They're waiting in their boxes for ages now.
Yup, I got a lot of samurai to go through too. Mostly Warlord Games; would love to see some of your Zenit samurai! I got one of the undead samurai lords, hope to paint him up at some time (looking at my list I forgot about him... )
I'll tackle them when my lizardmen are done. I've got to focus on one project at a time or I'll get nothing done...
