I agree, I know Citadel used to do metal samurai a long time ago. I would settle for them being in the video game version too.

I know I have a copy of the super-professional-looking Warhammer Army Project Nippon army book (6th and 8th editions I think) around here somewhere, really enjoyed that. Then again, if I ever were to play this army in an actual WHF game it would be easiest to run them as Empire. Just need to make some cannons...

These compliment my previously painted cavalry.

Oriental-style armies should have LOTS of gunpowder. Lots of rockets. Maybe some firework style things that create cover, or gas the troops affected...

Like I said, I had lots of ideas.

A firework gun would be fantastic! Like the old Empire rocket-volley-gun they had as an artillery piece.

Also I like the idea of using a giant dragon, like the big paper ones used in parades, and attaching a flamethrower to its mouth to use as a close-range weapon. Too bad that is more Chinese than Japanese though... and most of my army is historically based anyway :D

Yep, plus you can expand that out to rudimentary grenades and other gunpowder-esque things.

    I love the dragon idea.

In Warhammer Quest, Seaport Expansion from one of the old White Dwarf's, they had an oriental sword that used WS instead of strength when attacking. I think theNippon army would have something like this.

A return to Cryx today, and this is how my slayer currently looks.

    warden20201023_cryx WIP 19 slayer.jpg

I like him, but I am afraid I darkened the metal bits too much :(

Also he looks a bit like he is living in the Tron universe by mistake :D

Next up is the rest of the battlebox, and I am scared to start painting this reaper :bag:

    warden20201023_cryx WIP 18 slayer.jpg

    warden20201023_cryx WIP 20 slayer.jpg

Also am going to attempt the "paint stick" method for the bile thralls. Never painted this way before!

...went ahead and realized there was no reason to fear the Reaper after all.

    warden20201023_cryx WIP 22 reaper.jpg

Powered through him last night and got him finished. Less tidy than the Slayer, but I am happy enough with him to use in a game.

Also finished up the Bane Witch herself!

I completed another project late on Halloween, an old Zombie Dragon I had sitting around that my brother gave me the parts/casting for back in 2017.

    warden20201031_zombie dragon complete 03.jpg

The rider is a mix of Bretonnian and KOW Skeleton bits, made to blend into my other skeletons:

    warden20201031_zombie dragon complete 04.jpg

    warden20201031_zombie dragon complete 05.jpg
He is magnetized for easier transport of his wings. The tail is magnetized too:

    warden20201031_zombie dragon complete 01.jpg

    warden20201031_zombie dragon complete 02.jpg

Inspiration for his paint scheme is also from Basil the Batlord of lego fame:

    warden20201031_basil the batlord inspiration.jpg

    Looks great on my shelf!

Over the weekend I got some games in at my uncles'. We played two games of Warmachine and one of Kill Team:

    warden20201108_warmachine.jpg

Learning Warmachine was fun, he used to play regularily a long time ago so it was great to pit my fledgling force of Cryx against his Retribution. I pulled off a win during the first game, and he came back and won the second one.

    warden20201108_kill team.jpg

Also played a game of Kill Team, using some of my Admech against his Eldar. While figuring out the rules we both realized this was the first 40K-universe game I have played since I ran the Battle for Maccrage when that box set was new (and where most of the terrain for this battle came from), and was his first 40K-universe game period.

Having played WHF for many years did help though, as things like to-hit and to-wound is pretty similiar. We had a lot of fun during both games, it was great to learn, hope we can do more sometime!

Got a samurai hero miniature in the mail from Kensei Miniatures today, along with four ashigaru bannermen from Perry Miniatures. These along with some previously purchased models will help me putting together three more Daimyo and commander bases.

    warden20201110_samurai daimyo glueing 1.jpg

Ukita Hideie (Warlord Games) is already painted, now he will be getting two standard bearers to go along with him:

    warden20201110_samurai daimyo glueing 2.jpg

Shimazu Yoshihiro is one of my other leftover daimyo yet to be painted (from Steel Fist miniatures):

    warden20201110_samurai daimyo glueing 4.jpg

And my latest addition from Kensei will become Fukushima Masanori:

    warden20201110_samurai daimyo glueing 3.jpg

The Kensei samurai line are 32mm, so quite a bit bigger than the Warlord Games miniatures (especially the horse, it is huge). Roughly the same size as my Steel Fist Honda Tadakatsu:

    warden20201110_samurai daimyo glueing 5.jpg

Right after I took these pictures my brand new metal daimyo immediately broke his connection to his base, and I spent the next half hour trying to rig a new way to attach him. Wish the connection point wasn't so flimsy!!! :rage:

Always more work to do, but I powered through three more cryx bonejacks today, they are drying after their matte wash to bring down the metal shine.

    warden20201112_bonejacks.jpg

Only got a little more to do and the bile thralls will be done too!

Thank you all for the like bomb, especially @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl!

Took some better pics of the ripjaws and the nightwretch today.

    Ripjaws:

I couldn't get a good picture of it, but right between the bone jaws is a saw blade :D

    The nightwretch!

All four light warjacks painted up:

The nightwretch and the original deathripper are both magnetized, for future casting shenanigans:

I remember your enthusiasm toward Privateer Press’ stuff, nice to see you’re getting a chance to dive in. I’m especially interested to hear that Warmachine and Hordes factions can fight each other without much problem, which gives a nice collective variety between the two games. I’ve been reading up on it recently and the faction I like look of most is the Circle of Orboros, mainly because they are themed around Druids, Celts and nature (how predictable am I? :D).

Also great to see your Samurai are still getting some love, I’m enjoying watching your historical army grow. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks!

Continuing to work on the samurai today:

    warden20201114_samurai daimyo WIP 1.jpg

Got the bases for the new daimyo started, really enjoyed making the mon for the Fukushima clan (the one on the far left):

    warden20201114_samurai daimyo WIP 2.jpg

And I am enjoying the banners too:

    warden20201114_samurai daimyo WIP 3.jpg

Both the Warmachine and Hordes games were made with a very similar ruleset. Warmachine was made first, Hordes was made second and used warmachine as a basis to 'improve' slightly on the rules. I look at the main difference this way:
    • Warmachine has its wizards (called warcasters) who generate magic (called focus) each turn. They can cast spells, and also allocate some of that magic (focus) to the giant robots (warjacks) to allow them to fight better in combat
    • Hordes has its wizards (this time called warlocks) do not generate magic. Instead they lead large scary monsters (warbeasts) into battle who generate their own magic (called fury), which a wizard can remove from them and use to cast spells. If wizards don't remove enough fury from the monsters each turn the monsters may go beserk.
Same basic concept just a bit different. both Warmachine and Hordes have their wizard leader along with large combatants (the warjacks and warbeats) and many different kinds of infantry and solo-characters that fight on the battlefield.
