Interestingly, top villains was going to be a future topic in our TOP TEN Lists thread.

 

Does Thanos have any personality beyond being a big purple Ogre who wants to destroy half the universe's population? If not, then Shen laughs in the face of Thanos regardless of how much more powerful the latter is.

Indeed Thanos's closest double in the world of DreamWorks animation is probably Kai - both of them being extremely powerful superhuman threats, but not seeming to have much personality beyond that.

He is actually a pretty cool villain and arguably the main character of Infinity War (which is the best MCU movie in my opinion). The filmmakers did a great job giving him character beyond just a typical villain. As for his true extent, I guess you'd have to go to the source material, the comics. I'm not a comic reader myself, so I won't speak on it beyond saying that he has been around for a long time, so I'm pretty sure his character has been well fleshed out.

I never really considered it as Thanos versus Shen debate (and I don't believe that you or @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl did either) . That would be pointless endeavor as it is inherently unfair... definitely not be perfectly balanced as all things should be. Popularity, longevity, cultural impact and financial success are all massively skewed in favour of the mad titan.

When I posted the Thanos video response it was because Shen never made an impact on me, and I literally don't even remember the character or the movie (having only viewed it only a single time over a decade ago). I'm in no way claiming that he is not a great character, only that he was a forgettable character for me personally... hence the "I don't even know who you are" Thanos line.

The more I read and share on →this thread← the more I relate to his motivation... or at least a non-random version of it!

 

I won't go full comic book geek on you but compared to the comic version the Thanos in the movies was lame. They did a good job don't get me wrong but they had to make a villain for the normies, I get it there is alot of them and their money drives the movies forward. That being said he was a far weaker character and had stupid IMO objectives. Again this is verse the comic version and decades of story telling, I don't expect that level even if it'd be cool. I still think he wasn't written as well as he should have been but at least he was a credible threat. Haven't seen anything good in marvel since that and aren't expecting to.

 

I figured that would be the case... it's good to get confirmation from a comic book reader!
