Greetings, fellow lizards.

Rules question (Warhammer: The Old World – Combat / Challenges / Base Contact):

In the following combat situation, two units are engaged only via a corner contact involving a champion who is in a challenge with an enemy character.

Diagram:

----b b b b
----c b b b
x x c

  • c = my unit’s champion (in a challenge)
  • c = enemy character (in the challenge)
  • b = enemy rank-and-file models
  • x = my remaining unit models

The only initial base contact between the units is via the champion and the enemy character (c). No other models are in direct base contact.

If the champion is slain in the challenge, leaving the enemy character still engaged in the combat but no longer physically touching my remaining unit models, I am unsure how attacks are resolved.

Question:

Do my remaining unit models (x) still count as being engaged in the combat and are therefore allowed to allocate attacks against the enemy unit’s rank-and-file models (b), even though the only remaining “contact” is the enemy character involved in the ongoing challenge?

Or does the removal of the champion mean that, since the only remaining base contact is with a character that cannot be attacked due to an ongoing challenge, my remaining unit models are no longer able to make attacks in this combat?
