8th Ed. What to expect? 1200 pt tourney.

Hello everyone!

So I'm a bit of a lurker, been around for a while but rarely really post. Yet I'm in need of some advice so thought I'd actually start a topic.

I'm going to a 1200 point tourney and simply wonder what should I expect? By this I mean, what should I expect to see against me? What might a basic army composition look like? I feel like it's a bit of an interesting point bracket since I don't suppose I will be seeing tones of magic, likewise I wouldn't have thought I will be seeing armies with a huge block of units. This uncertainty is making it hard for me to think of a list (which is already hard with the new book).

I was looking at the army list sub-forum for some inspiration but couldn't really find anything. Although, one list had 20 temple guard on their own and I wondered if this was valid in the new book and why?

Take 4 lazerdons.

I kid but at that point level your opponent will have only 900 points for shenanigans. At that level most of what the lizardmen are good at, outlasting your opponents should be valid. That will hopefully allow less elite infantry and cannons. The bane of our monsters. I think a double lazerdon list might be effective. And a small unit of chameleons for special. Maybe a salamander or two. But your list should be solid depending on what your facing. What's the current meta in your area.

at 1200 pts... you can actually expect some people to take level 4 mages... if only to catch their opponents out who dont take them...

For skaven you can almost field a grey seer and warlord for that... but not quite...

From skaven you will run into either a grey seer with some toys backed up by a couple of WEs with equipment as well as a bsb...

Or a warlord on bonebreaker as a mobile fighty dude you can throw away as well as a 2nd warlord as the general...

skaven will also have (depending on rules) 2 units at least of slaves of between 35-50 models.

and then 3 units of rat darts.

They may try to either take an abomb... or a cannon and a doomwheel...

you would prob prefer to see the abomb... cause a cannon at that points could wipe out half a unit a turn. and the doomwheel will kill any monster you field if he has a decent game.

also expect a unit or two of clannies with maybe WFT and if not then some gutter runners and a banner wield unit of stormvermin.

Not sure what other armies might bring... but I cant imagine skaven would deviate from those units too much...

Of course the skaven book is prob one of the more balanced... so they may very well take a funance unit with a decent block of monks and plague banner just to chew up anything in front of them... but I doubt it.

Wow, I didn't expect such huge mobs to be honest. I guess there really can be a huge range in army comps. I already know there's a bret player who has a total of 27 models for his 1200 points, so that's one extreme. Then Skaven seems to be the other. Making a balanced list to combat both seems a challenge. Of course I'd like to point out that I'm really new to playing games.

When I make lists up I always think I'll be able to play against the elite armies. I like my ancient steg and cowboy scar vet. It's the huge mobs of people that worry me... Anyway, I'll have a go at lists.
