8th Ed. Which Stegadon?

Hey all,

I just started a lizardmen army and havent had many games with them yet. Just wanted to get your opinion on whether or not it was actually worth it to upgrade the stegadon to an Ancient one. I mean, the ancient has one better save and the two blow pipes but at a low range. The Regular one has 1 more attack and the bolt thrower can do damage from range. Opinions ?

The ancient is also STR 6, which is huge when taking on the other big baddies. I've had my ancient stand toe to toe with hydras, treemen, and the big spider and whooped them all. STR 6 impact hits are pretty awesome too.

I have never used a regular steg in a game. That is because I usualy use either the EOTG or the skink chief with warspear. Beyond the better AS, the ancient steg has the double blowpipes. This is a plus for you as you get a total of 4d6 shots that do not suffer from the multi-shot rule (no -1 for multi shooting). The regular steg cannot move and shoot IIRC. So, in my opinion, the ancient is the way to go.

Agreed with Aril. Its the move or shoot rule that kills it. Since you have to sit there to use you you basically bought a crapy BS 3 bolt thrower for over 200 points.
Ancient Steg all the way.

One of the downsides of a regular ancient (no character on top) is that is eats up your points for rare choices. And, quite simply, I love my salamanders! You might not be able to field Sala's when fielding an ancient.
But, otherwise, the ancient also has my preference. No character on top though, that's too much points on a 'small' base (also, I tend to face cannons/lots of shooting). I also like the improved armor save it bolsters.

am i the only one whos says screw the steggy shooting and rushes it in it close combat? honestly i dont have the time to mess with the bolt thower witch cant hit crap. and i viewed the blowpipes as a awww i didnt charge for some reason.... atleast i can stand and shoot

Pretty sure that Giant Bow CAN move and shoot, the FAQ only says the it is "slow to fire" which only means that it can't stand and shot.

Just got me a steg and am going to try it out next week.

I usually use a EOTG with a lvl 2 skink priest, the alignments are nice and it counts as hero, meaning you have rare points left for sallies and razordons, however, the priest is quite vulnerable in combat when you charge it in, so it's probably worth investing in a magic item with a decent ward save.

The Giant bow can move and shoot, but it can't march and shoot. I usually forgo marching the first turn so it doesn't outpace my M4 Saurus and take a potshot during the first turn. Once in a great while the Great Bow hits and brightens your day.

The last game I took Stegadons I took down a slightly Terrorgheist with the giant bow. Too bad I didn't kill anything but his Terrogheists that battle. I consider any day the Great Bow does something a good day regardless.

I'm with Scalenex on this one. I take the baby steg because I like to use my rare points for Sallies, not to mention that I find Stegs in general to be a scary place to put all those points, so easily lost to a couple bolt thrower shots or single cannon ball. Any savings on cost is a big plus to me. Same wounds, same toughness, save is irrelevant anyway, and one extra attack for less points? Yes please!

As for the giant bow, I don't expect it to do anything, but at some point I invariably need to make a normal (non-march) move and get to fire it, and in the last game it actually skewered 4 elves - I think the psychological effect of that greatly outweighed the effect it had on the elf battle plan, but sometimes that's what wins you games

Finally, the baby is represented by the old metal model, which just has such a wonderful "heft" to it, and lovely conversion possibilities. Posting this is kinda getting me motivated to finished working on it, thanks!
