When I get the workspace I am making a full shirt for myself then a lighter shirt for the boyfriend (he has back problems the extra weight might aggravate but he still wants to wear one)
Full plate armour was a game changer back in the day. Until the invention and distribution of firearms, a knight in full plate armour had a HUGE advantage on the field of battle. Have you considered making mail shirt for your boyfriend out of aluminum? It will weigh next to nothing, and as long as you aren't planning on going to war (in which case it will provide very little protection), it will look great. Titanium links would also save you about half the weight (while maintaining strength and providing corrosion resistance) but would be quite costly.
I am using aluminum for him that I already decided! I am a masochist and sticking with my galvanized steel for myself.
Good!! That should give you a decided advantage should you ever have to face him in battle! You now know his weakness!
Luckily for him he won't be doing any sort of battling, the risk of him doing that with his back injury is too great. I will best him in combat by stealing his army notes instead! Now me on the other hand? I am looking to sign up for actual broadsword stuff
The question is would you best him in combat if his back were not injured and he was fully healthy? HEMA sounds like fun. There is so much great stuff to learn. Are you interested in longswords (2 handed) or sword + shield? Any interest in other medieval weapons.... spear, halberd, glaive, etc?
If he was healthy...heck naw see below (preinjury) My interest is primarily longsword or sword and shield but I have a reallllyyy good feeling about halberds and poleaxes. And archery, I was decent as a kid. Its just excellent exercise overall (if its medieval I love it)
Please take a suggestion and look up your localSCA chapter. We would be happy to help you get going. Www.SCA.org/welcome
@Lord-Marcus I actually know my local chapter! We are the Canton of the Towers in the Eastern Kingdom!
Awesome. Lord Marcus, chronicler of the Barony of Wyvernwoode in the Kingdom of Trimaris, at your service.
I'm sure you'll have a great deal of fun with it. Just experiment with some different weapon combinations and find what works best for you!
It would be good to get a feel for all of them, because it gives you a better sense of how to counter each of them.
