Hey y'all! This is a question to all of you who already have the new Battletome for Beasts of Chaos. I am considering playing that army, but I am not too eager to paint mass units such as Ungors. I do like the big ones (Doombull, Bullgors, Centigor, Cygors) and the Brayherd heroes. The more elite Bestigors would also be OK. I wonder: are there bataillons in the book that support that play style? What about allies? I have a Silver Tower set so a few Tzaangors (as Tzaangor enlightened) might work, and I have a Ogroid Thaumaturge for magical support. Basically the goal would be to build an elite army consisting of few models. For 1250 points or so for now. Any good ideas how that could work?
I have the book here so I can give a few things out. Beasts of Chaos is a bit boring when it comes to allies as they can only ally with Slaves to Darkness. Tzaangors, Shaman, and Skyfires/Enlightened are in the book with a Brayherd/Beasts of Chaos keyword along with them. No Ogroid though sadly enough. There is a Battalion for a Warherd along with artefacts and command traits for Warherd heroes The Khorne battalion could also be an idea as it has a mix of the heavy units, with ones that the Warherd ones don't have like the Centigors and Dragon Ogors
Hmmm.... So if I want to play beastmen + Ogroid I would have to play a Tzeentch army with Beastmen as allies. Meh. Don't want that. Even though I could use Mark of Chaos to give them the Tzeentch keyword and they wouldn't even be allies I think. But then I would have to use Tzeentch allegiance. But playing Warherd might be an option, and taking a Brayherd Shaman or Dragon Ogre for the magic. Hmmm....
Many people asked about combining the marked beasts with the daemons. GW never really answered the question clearly so hopefully the FaQ might answer that. How I want to make more use of my Nurgle, then I realised with Clan Pestilens also. The Slannesh one is interesting also, the book has many choices and I love it
The book looks awesome (just finished reading it myself) knocked together an army...it seems amazingly OP lol - the amount of damage and mortal wounds you can churn out is crazy. If you want less models go for thunderscorn (as they cost more) but retain magic ability and healing. If you don’t mind losing some magical ability but want brute strength warherd is the one. I do myself prefer go mix the Tzaangors as well...they are crazy good (ranged attacks of death) And of course throw a few nasty monsters into the mix for some extra clout (cockatrice is 100 points and can put out some serious hurt if used right)
I’ve gone for: Dragon ogor shaggoth (general) -mutating gnarlblade -unraveling aura -sundering blades spell Tzaangor shaman -Titanic fury spell Tzaangor shaman -wild rampage - 30x gors 10x ungor 10x ungor - Jabberslyth - Cockatrice Cockatrice Cockatrice 3x Tzaangor skyfires 3x Tzaangor skyfires 10x Tzaangors Chaos spawn Chaos spawn -2,000 points -Tzench mark -Gavespawn -Herdstone The synergies are awesome... Shaggoth gets an extra +2 damage on his axe from artefact - shaman no1 can buff him with an extra attack on all of his melee weapons (all) for a damage potential of 29, shaman no2 gives him wounding re-rolls. Shamans not only buff the big lad but can also deal d3 mortal wounds a piece as per their base spell whilst creating a new Tzaangor for every wound Inflicked (hence the 10man unit of them) providing the spells hit off that’s a nice 2-6 free Tzaangors per round (they have the ability to cast 2 spells once per game so can buff the shaggoth when needed) They also buff the skyfires within range. The gors get a +1 rend from shaggoth, extra attack for being near a chaos spawn with his command ability, another extra attack for having over 20 models and of course al the benefits for being near a herdstone. Jabber simply adds some extra kick and if his aura works (slim chance) but if it does happy days (no attacking/casting etc) And the 3x cockatrice can dish out 3d6 mortal wounds to anything round and shouts (monsters and elites mostly) + decent melee attacks on the charge. Ungors are poor sacrificial lambs - at least one unit heads for the herdstone to slit their own throats, summon a nice monster or some more skyfires etc in a round or two.
I might try and go with a minimum army this time also, how nearly every army I have is horde based and I am a little tired carting so many miniatures around. Still having the beast horde though as I have a few units already. That's what makes the Beasts of Chaos a good book, it's very flexible with the units.
I've just had a look at my usual supplier and they have them all in stock. Now what would be in a minimum army because is the SC box worth it for just the big guy?
The big guy only.... I tend to say it isn't worth it then. But if you can use the shaman then it may be worth it. Shaman + Cygor = 44+11,5 = 55,5 Euros Start collecting = 65 Euros I think you can sell the small guys on Ebay for more than 10 Euros since a box of Ungors and Bestigors is more than 20€ each and the Bestigors are even out of stock right now (at least it said out of stock online on the site I just saw)
One biggass shaggoth 3x units of dragon ogres and whatever filler you fancy really. Contemplating making a shaggoth from a carnosaur body (sculpting the top beastmen half) as the older one just isn’t big enough
