The World Cup 2026 thread!

Yeah, to be honest, I think Dark Age Vikings would have laughed at Haaland... no beard, a girly bun, and a primadonna's temperament. Hardly a worthy legacy of the fearsome Norsemen (but then, said Vikings spent more time murdering monks and taking defenceless villagers as slaves, so perhaps Haaland is a fitting Viking after all ;)).

But, England pulled off a great win against Mexico, and Norway defeated an ailing Brazil (Poor Pele must be turning in his grave fast enough to provide enough electricity for an entire favela for a year), so the two sides will be against one another in the quarter finals... a classic Dark Age matchup. Last time the two sides played against each other, the Norwegian Captain ended up with an arrow in his neck and less than a twelfth of the ships that arrived returned home :coolest:

Clash of the iberian peninsula!

Grrr, Imrahil

And horray for England!

(That red card was undeserved, btw)

I sense a bit of resentment in you. Almost as if his ancestors were killing your ancestors and pillaging their lands ;) . The dude is 6'5" and over two hundred pounds. Fast and strong. The other day when we were watching the game, my wife commented that she noticed that a Brazilian defender ran into him, bounced off as if he were a child, while Haaland didn't even move.

On top of that he is an absolute goal machine and has a generally friendly and humble attitude.

That's an interesting way of phrasing it.

According to the FIFA men's ranking, as of today,

England (ranked #4) beat Mexico (ranked #10)
While...
Norway (ranked #19) beat Brazil (ranked #5)

Or if you prefer:

England (1 WC championship) beat Mexico (0 WC championships)
While...
Norway (0 WC championships) beat Brazil (5 WC championships)

The Norway victory is much more monumental. It's their first time going so deep in the tournament. They are the small country underdogs. The Cinderella story of the tournament, now that Cabo Verda have been dispatched. They've sort of become the sweetheart team that the neutral fans cheer for. Plus they do that awesome Viking row!!

so the two sides will be against one another in the quarter finals.
Both have absolute world class strikers, but England has the much deeper bench. England are deservedly the betting favourites, but Norway always has a chance.

UPDATED: this is the order of the teams in terms of how much I WANT them to win it all (not who I think will win, but who I want to win):

1. Argentina
2. Norway
3. Canada
4. Brazil

5. Switzerland
6. England
7. Spain
8. Belgium
9. USA
10. Mexico

11. Egypt
12. Paraguay
13. Columbia
14. Morocco
15. France
16. Portugal

Some eliminations from the bottom of my ordered list! Happy to see Portugal to go. Looking forward to tomorrow's big game!

FIFA need to be dissolved. It was bad enough with Blatter but Infantino is just as corrupt. Cancelling Balogun's red card suspension at the request of Trump. The world needs a new football federation. EUFA's response was correct and succinct.
Still KARMA saw the USA totally humiliated by a far better and more technical side in Belgium.

What is more ironic is that it was the USA who insisted Blatter be investigated and removed for corruption, yet now one of the most moronic and corrupt leaders in the world (Trump - US) has encouraged corruption back into FIFA.

Keep politics out of sport!

I think you mean Colombia and not the brand here.

I was wondering if someone was going to bring this up. I wasn't going to mention it (because nothing derails a thread faster than politics), but now that the cat is out of the bag :p

Was it right?... no
Should it have happened?... no
Was it funny?... I mean, yes

My buddy was over yesterday watching the games and he actually seemed visibly upset by it (he is a huge Trump hater). We've always had a "frenemy" type relationship; always on opposite sides of just about everything and quite competitive. So while he's fuming, I'm laughing my ass off. I openly admit that they should not have allowed political interference to seep into the sport, but at the same time, I'm an agent of Chaos. And this is pure chaos. Like I always say: there is no escape from Chaos, it marks us all.

Funny enough, there is precedence for it. It was 64 years ago, but it is there. (and no, I'm not justifying it)

And of course, it's another source for quality meme fodder:
