Blog The Grove: Personal and Commission Works

I wanted a couple of Astrolith Bearers, but really didnt feel like paying $22 a piece for them. I had the Thunderbeast Host and made these proxy models with extra stegadon bits! Not as cool as the originals but hey, it saved me $44 + shipping! The only thing that sucks are the way the banners sit with these guys. I may cut the arm off and shave some plastic off to get the banner straight,

I don't know they look cool to me, I have loads of skink bits and I'm going to use them for the display board.

Working on the horns... its taking a while... so many different paint coats.... very tedious
Black, Rhinox Hide, Screaming Skull, then White from the Badger Minitaire line. All with multiple then coats... been working on it for a week now.

Wow those horns look amazing how did you do that... (I suck at the horns...)

I'd like to know your recipe for the flesh on the white and purple steg. Not that I don't like the black and red one, it's great, but I have a lot of trouble with fleshtones

Thanks for all the love guys!

Everything is very thing thin layers...painting basically spears at the start of the horn while going more full towards the end of the horn.
Primer - either white or black
Base coat - Black - I think I used Badger Minitaire Black
Layer 1 - GW Rhinox Hide - covering almost all of the black
Layer 2 - GW Rhinox Hide - This paint tends to go on really thick so I water both layer down a good mount.
Layer 3 - GW Bestial Brown (Mournfang Brown) - Bestial Brown goes on really nice even when water down, this just needed one coat. Covering most of the Rhinox Hide.
Layer 4 - GW Screaming Skull - Covering most of the Bestial Brown
Layer 5 - GW Screaming Skull
Later 6 - Badger Minitaire I believe Skull (or Snow) White - covering much of the Screaming Skull
Layer 7 - *
--- I usually airbrush horns and such.. and now I remember why ... because its 1000x faster... but I just finihed these yestrday and it looks wayyyyyy better.
--- Another tip, dont just paint lines that dont connect until the very tip, which is what I used to do. Connect the colors much sooner. I believe I screwed this up on my Lord Kroak that I painted. I left the colors separated much further on Kroak and it looks no where near as good. I hope this makes sense.\

White Primer
Base - Badger Minitaire - Ancient Bone - Two coats
Layer 1 - Badger - Ghost Ink: Brown - i believe i did the whole model
Highlight - Ancient Bone - pick out almost all areas except recessed shaded
Shade - GW Devon Mud - Only really recessed areas and deep muscle lines.
Highlight/Drybrush - GW screaming skull - only the most raised areas.

Hope this helps! If you are using GW paints you can make it work with those as well. Let me know if thats what you're using.

I will hopefully have more pics soon! Stayed tuned way more to come! I'm going to throw down on a Carnosaur (bright yellow and blue themed) as well as some Terradons, Chameleon Skinks, Skink Priest, and Temple Guard! I am sure much more after that as well!

Yeah I use GW paints but my assortment of colours goes back to the good (bad) old days of Bleached Bone, Chaos Black and Chestnut Ink. I love the new paint ranges and would love to update my pallet but it's something I'm doing gradually.

Great writeup and thanks for the tips!

Ok it would be white primer, bleached bone layers, chestnut ink watered down and applied in all the crevices, screaming skull drybrush on raised areas, then chestnut ink in the inner most crevices (the darkest parts.)

These look amazing! I can't wait to see how everything turns out! It took me seven months to paint a 1500 point Grey Knight army which is like 20 models so I wouldn't worry about time :)

Ya my last commission job was a black gk army. It was 2 dreadknight nights, 2 librarians, 28 terminators. .. I got it done in 2 months but it was a struggle... very boring painting the same armore over and over.

I found it a struggle as well. I ended up airbrushing much more than I had originally intended too.

Do you do a lot of commissions?

I have thought about starting to do some but unsure if there is a need.

I do them here and there. I am not super aggressive trying to get commissions. I mostly advertise on dakkadakka.com My gallery there is a lot bigger. I've done some pretty big armies, mostly 40k. My last was a pretty big Grey Knights army. I mostly paint and sell my stuff on ebay. Sucks you have to pay fees but this way I can paint what i want and sell it.
