Hey everyone,

I decided to start a blog for my Seraphon army because I wanted some feedback on what/how to improve upon my painting skills. I just finished my Saurus Warriors unit today and now ill be starting on the Salamander and Skink Handlers unit. The look and feel I'm going for is space, lots of blues, purples, blacks, reds, and maybe some green here and there or the occasional red and orange for a star. They look great, you can take it a step further by washing the gold and the highlighting it at the moment it looks a little flat but that is fine as they do look great.
 
Agree. They look really great already but you could add a bit more depth with some washes.
 
Thanks for the feedback! I used nuln oil to shade the back scales of the units but other than that I haven't done anything else. I'll wash the helmets in reikland fleshlade but I always have trouble with highlighting despite watching multiple YouTube videos. I can't seem to discern where to do it and when I do I can't seem to make a straight line with my brush, though that comes with practice. Nevertheless I'll use some auric armour to highlight them and see how it goes!
 
Just finished my salamander and skink handler unit! I liked the colors I used in this one but the outcome was...less than desirable. The salamander looks very odd and shiny while the skinks were a pain due to the modelling process, I believe it's called finecast? It was vastly different than the material my start collecting box had and there seemed to be a lot more holes and weird curves on the models. My Lord Kroak, which I'm holding off of at the moment since I can't decide which color to make the palanquin and his bandages, had been cast in the same material. Either way I'll have to revisit these models and try and improve them. Thanks again for taking a look at what I have!

Nothing really wrong with those guys, good choice of colors.
But since you asked for critique:

Yes, Finecast resin is a pain. I don't like it much. Sometimes stuff is warped, and it is less detailed than plastic. Also a lot of casting flash and you have to clean it so your paint sticks, all that jazz.

Like many other people I am not a great fan of the Salamander model itself, but that "still dimly glowing charcoal-black" look on that Salamander is kinda nice and the gold is a great contrast to the black. I like it.

The Skink Handlers could use a little bit of blue shade on the skin I think, and I admit that the golden eyes are not my style. Otherwise they look good though.

Not sure about the black toes of the skinks, those don't have much contrast to the ground. Maybe you could drybrush them a tiny bit lighter.

Oh, and get rid of the holes in your bases, those look weird. :D

So it is a different material, my Lord Kroak came in the same material and I really did not like it. I hope to see more of the same material used in the start collecting boxes.

Thanks for the compliments on the Salamander! Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the model, though I have seen some painted in a way that really makes it stand out, be it for better or worse.

Thanks for the advice, I've got some drakenhoff nightshade so I'll give them a wash in that instead of the nuln oil. The golden eyes look is gonna be a constant theme in my army, kind of like an attribute to them since they are brimming with celestial/high azyr energy. Maybe I can modify it a bit though with shading and highlighting and it will look a bit better.

For the toes I don't have a lot of good grey paints, I pretty much have eshin grey and celestra grey so once I stop by my local citadel paint dealer I'll pick some up and try highlighting them.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the holes either, how do I get rid of them? Do I have to go buy some green stuff or can I get enough paint and layer over it?

Paint won't be sufficient to fill them. Here's what I do:

I use a bit of PVA glue mixed with.. pretty much anything you have, even sand or dirt will work. I mostly use sand. Put it into the hole and let it dry.

You can of course use green stuff (paint or even liquid green stuff is too thin) but that's a waste of money IMO.

Air drying clay works well. Or just stick a sprue part in there so only thin holes remain, then liquid green stuff will suffice.
 
I don't have any PVA glue on hand, but I do have some random sprues and plastic glue. I think ill put a sprue in the spot, plastic glue it in, and then paint over it.
 
Hey everyone,

So I found an amazing carnosaur model with the perfect color scheme I'm going for. The issue is I'm not too sure what paint colors to use and how I should go about doing it. I have a picture which is posted below that I found while looking through a Seraphon facebook group.

This model is not mine and I do not claim ownership for it. I do not plan on this being an exact copy, I'm going to use a different color scheme for the rider, the colors for the chair will probably be different, and I do not plan on using the same base scheme.

I'm having trouble with figuring out what layers of blue to use. It looks like screamer pink or pink horror had been used for the spine scales, with xerus purple or genestealer purple as the side spine scales, both washed in nuln oil. It looks like naggaroth purple was then used to make back scales, but after that I have no idea, maybe it's teclis blue heavily washed in nuln oil? Throw out what you think might be the case. My only other confusion lies with the color of the symbols on the harness, and the color used for the carnosaurs eyes and claws. Thanks taking a look and hopefully I can get better idea of this!

The dark blue looks like Kantor blue to me and the eyes are Baharroth or Imrik the symbols look like white with Nihilakh oxide over the top, and it's airbrushed by the look of it.
 
That Carno is a masterpiece. Don't be sad if you don't get yours to look like that.

...and I have seen it before... might even have been here on the forums or over at TGA....
 
Thanks for the response! Yeah your right the darker areas do look like Kantor blue, maybe I'll start with a Kantor blue coat all over the body except for the head. I'm still not too sure what that lighter blue is though, I think its teclis blue but I can't day for sure. Thanks for the info on the eyes and symbols! Ive never heard of Baharroth or Imrik paint so ill grab a bottle of possibly both when I get to my local game store. Same nihilakh oxide. Thanks again Crowsfoot!
 
Yeah it really is absolutely beautiful the blending is amazing with the colors, sometimes I cant even tell where one color starts and another ends! Im looking forward to painting it but I don't think I'll get something close to this model, which is alright with me.

Blending with an airbrush is very easy compared to a brush, you can get the same effect with a brush but it takes hours, with an airbrush it is minutes.
 
Yeah I've heard a lot of people use airbrushing now, and I can definitely see why from the results. It just seems very expensive at the same time as well.
 
I absolutley love your warriros! Which colors did you use for the shields ?
 
Hey thanks for the praise! The colors I used for the shield are Kantor Blue as a base, Naggaroth Night for the edges, Nuln Oil for a shade, Retributor Armour for the gold, and Khorne Red for the symbol.

Do you have any tips for this @Crowsfoot ? I recently got an airbrush and can't get the stupid thing to work right. It's getting clogged frequently!

By the way @LukeDraconis , I'm digging the color scheme! It looks like we're both going for similar vibes with our armies -- deep, dark space. I'm actually painting my warriors the same way now :) If you don't mind I'm gonna bookmark your thread -- feel like it's going to be great inspiration! Looking forward to more updates!
