Out of curiousity, why in the world is an M of fairly arbitrary size used for scale?

The size is also known as “one quarter of an inch” (I translated-converted for the metric among us.)

M stands for Metal. (Thus indicating the material used for the model. A stack of four would be 25mm tall.)

B stands for Bones (The plastic material Reaper uses for some/many Miniatures.)

They may also have R’s for resin. (But they make very-very-very few resin pieces.)

Right, a quarter of an inch is somewhat less arbitray and actually make some sense. Makes me curious why inches seem to be prefered in wargaming though, it's the only field I've seen it be so prevelant even in places that'd normally use metric.

I think that's mainly because of historical reasons.

What I like about it concerning AoS:
Base sizes are in metric, and 25mm is _just_ below one inch. So if you are at base contact and the unit has 1" range then the second row can hit the target.

Other than that... meh. They could use cm just as well. The numbers are a bit bigger but that's it. IIRC the smallest distance GW uses in rules is half an inch (when charging), and that's 1.2cm. They could use 1cm just as well.

About that Base sizes, are we sure they are 25mm?^^ i mean has anyone exactly measured them? They are sold as 25mm but maybe they are in fact 1" :D need to measure some of my next time i got a digital calliper

The old 90° corner cavalry bases (from GW) have always been 24mm wide (rather than 25).

This is easy to verify without resort to a ruler.

Set five cavalry bases against six 20mm infantry bases. The distance (120mm) will match exactly.

I have no idea why they engineered it to be that way.....but they did.

    Well, they are called 25mm.
And yeah I also measured them using a caliper. So yeah, smaller than an inch. At least the ones I measured.

Well... almost. In fact I haven't measured enough of them to see what tolerances they used.

Still odd though, it originated in Germany (or well, prussia). Unless at one point say GW was basicly the only major company producing wargames, and the current competitors all decided to emulate the one succesfull company, it seems weird for basicly all of em to work with inches.

Don't expect too much. It most likely will not be playable in matched games anyway.

I expect something similar to the Heavenswatch bataillon.

Why wouldn't it be playable? All these have been as far as I know. It's going to be a weird combination of stuff in there though if you take what's on the box. 99% skinks, and then a random oldblood on foot who has no synergy or interaction with the rest of the box.

    Slightly late :p

The opposite is the case for the bataillons in Start Collecting boxes, that's why I assumed it won't work.

The other battleforce boxes all had a warscroll inside, so this one probably does to :p

    Also, evil store manager ;)
