Mayan Art Megathread

I like this one a lot! Looks line a number of pyramids from Palenque, and maybe a few others. Would make a great gaming table too...


Some artwork from the city of Lamanai:

 

A cutaway of Copan. Most Mayan city centers were constantly being renovated, with centuries of prior construction buried underneath the visible layer of structures. Copan was no exception; in fact because of the nearby river Archaeologists were given an unparalleled glimpse into this building practice when the river cause a portion of the ritual center of the city to erode away, exposing the layers underneath.



… and Altar 13 at Caracol (830 AD). Looks a lot like one of the smaller structures built within the Copan complex to me.

Monument 99, looks like a lone-nosed creature. Made me think of Gonzo from the muppets:

Honored by your kind words; in reality I just really like Mayan art and a lot of stuff like it

 

Also side note about this location: not only has the name often been labelled as Abaj Takalik, but the ancient name may have been Kooja according to Wikipedia. And its one of the oldest Mayan sites, coming into existence by 400 BC (rest of classical Mayan sites hit their heyday in the 600-900s). Got a lot more reading to do!
