And thus ends @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl 's dream of an all plastic TOW game.

This, along with their statement "Every 8th Edition Warhammer Fantasy army will be playable, with our focus on the featured Old World armies" is troubling. Every army may be playable from the start, but then, in time, some armies will be more playable than others. Furthermore, Tomb Kings and Bretonnia were playable in AoS... for a while... and then not. Could be a case of the old bait and switch, in which case, no thanks GW.

Continue with 8th edition and only adopt TOW IF it proves itself to be a better game.

If ToW will be good, that's acceptable...

True... but that is an awfully big IF. Especially considering that they don't intend to support all armies (even remotely) equally.

I have to say that I am very dissapointed with these announcements. 3 years waiting for a very underwhelming presentation of 10 minutes. And as I see it, forget about lizardmen in TOW. They might get rules (at first, and probably with little care) that will never be updated and will quickly become obsolete after the typical GW power creep.

Lizzies will be in it, maybe not at the start but they will.

Eventually it all comes down how popular TOW is going to be.

I must confess, I was underwhelmed by the TOW announcements as well. I guess it's just taking a while to (re)build the Bret & TK ranges, but I felt like there should have been a little more to it.

Well maybe it's because I have not been eagerly anticipating a return to "Fantasy" for the past few years having not long been back in the hobby but with the recent reveals and info I for one am hyped :D
I think I "stopped" around the release of the battle of Skull pass(I bought it back in the day) but that was around the time my friend group started to split, either moving away or becoming more interested in other social circles. I love AoS but the list building aspect has always felt lacklustre in comparison to other systems like the MESBG and Fantasy. Having to chose whether or not a unit has a "command group" makes such a difference to me.

Don't know why? At this moment they aren't focussing on lizzies and some other armies. Yet we are getting rules. My only concern is that these secondary army rules are gonna suck against the main armies they are focussing on.

Well, for a starter... to have Bretonnia, TK and Empire, and NO VC in the fluff, it makes absolutely no sense.
    Also, no skaven?

Pretty big announcement! I do get that they focus on 9 factions, focussing on all of them is a pretty big ask. I rather have 9 good factions rather then 15 half baked ones.. but it's too bad we are not one of them.

They do say we will be playable though, which is good. Thinking about starting bretonnia now myself to have a full army in the first wave, it does sound we will have a pretty weak first pdf instead of a full codex..

No VC is strange yes, certainly. Especially if you do have Khemri. Probably they like the Egyptian flavor more as a different flavor than just gothic VC?

It might not be a source of panic just yet, because this:
Suggests that they're starting off with fewer factions to see how well the game does and make it easier for new players to get on board with the setting, like Warhammer: Total War only had 4 factions to start off with and expanded later on.

I mean we've already seen that they're planning on making Kislev and Cathay models in time, so they definitely are planning to expand the game as time goes on so long as it is successful, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they gradually released supplements for the other factions later when their regions of the world are examined, much like Warhammer: Total War, and that the PDFs are simply a placeholder for existing players to keep using their army until then.

I think it's also worth bearing in mind that most of the factions that are going to get the love first are either those who were scrapped soon into AoS (Bretonnians and Tomb Kings) or those that had their model range severely culled as AoS marched on (Dwarfs, High Elves, Wood Elves, and Empire too if we're counting the fact that they're going to be replaced with the new Cities of Skubmar range in the AoS section of the GW website in the near future). By contrast, most of the factions that are currently being left out of model and book love survived the Fantasy-AoS transition pretty much unscathed (certainly Vampires, Skaven, Daemons, Ogres and Lizardmen still function as armies in their own right, and right now Dark Elves still have the vast majority of their models spread between Daughters of Khaine and Cities of Skubmar), so it sounds to me as if GW have the operation spread out over a long period of time and are focusing on the most neglected Fantasy factions first, which conveniently enough are also some of the bigger players in the Old World.

As for Chaos Dwarfs, it may well be that GW have a new plastic range still in the works, because they haven't been subtle about them remaining in the AoS universe in recent times with the Hobgoblins and Horns of Hashut, and are waiting until the range arrives before giving them full rules in both AoS and TOW.

Something I am pissed about though is that they're classing Tomb Kings as Evil now. They're clearly the good-guy Undead, with Vampires serving as the evil thralls of Nagash.

However, good to see Beastmen are there (here's hoping for the return of Beast Herds and Raiders to distinguish them from Orcs and Warriors), plus Dawi, Greenskins, Bretonnia, High Elves and for a change, Tomb Kings being the Undead faction that is front and centre. Also it's great to see the confirmation of the return of the old models! As @Killer Angel has already said, this is the biggest win!

Interesting to see the Island of Blood Swordmasters appearing again, perhaps they'll be released in their own plastic set at last. Plus the appearance of Irondrakes confirms my hypothesis that they'll be moved over to the TOW store when the game arrives.

Looking forward to seeing the classic Orcs come back, as I'm still missing some spear Boyz and Boar Boyz for my Greenskins. Also the appearance of the old plastic chapel makes me hope they're going to bring all the scenery back as well, which would be the icing on the cake.

Strange to see the old Finecast/metal Treeman making a return when the plastic one currently in the Sylvaneth section of the website was originally released in 8th Edition, but it shows they're pulling all the stops out to bring old models back.

So I will likely play this, if only to try it out and for variety every now and then, but I seriously am leaning toward just sticking with 8th

Would be nice to get some more normal Orcs. I have a lot of metal boar riders and wolf riders, a few of each kind of chariot, but not much else at the moment.

It was always but the faintest of dreams. The smallest glimmer of hope. This announcement kills that dream and dashes any hope for the new game. Looks like 8th edition Warhammer Proper remains KING.

I cross-referenced this update with my list of favourite WHFB armies and it does not bode well...

    upload_2023-5-23_21-12-56.png

Seems like a very bad trade. Most of my favourite armies are pretty much relegated to the trash bin of TOW.

This doesn't bother me too much (since it can be easily ignored), but it makes little sense. Tomb Kings are essentially Wood Elves, as they pretty much just want to be left alone.

    I
I mean, sure, if you have a group to play 8th with. In my country, the Netherlands, 8th is fully dead now. I hope TOW will be a reinvigoration for fantasy. For me personally, i don't really have 8th to lose, so i just hope TOW is a succes and it gets new people into fantasy gameplay and away from AoS and 40K.

I would like to add that support for 40K and other recent GW games has been great, so i have good hope that they being that quality to TOW, making me a bit surprised the forum is so negative on TOW right now.
