Blog Fitzloq's Painting Log - New Year, New Army 2022

The models are great, but your paint job is top class. Really amazing work there.
Agreed. That also makes me what to ask a question. @Fitzloq how did you find painting the resin Kroxigor as opposed to the plastic Skinks? Do you think the resin took the paint in the same way? I haven't tried painting any resin models yet.

Depends on the resin. Finecast is god awful and I hate it. It's horrible to paint and leaves an awful texture, it's especially bad when it comes to cloth. As for 3D printed models, they're absolutely fine and take the paint just as well as the skinks or any other model would. The details might not be as crisp but your mileage will vary depending on the model, printer, settings, resin etc. This will only get better as time goes on.

I'm actually considering using the Last Sword models for Saurus Warriors because, let's be real, the GW Saurus are more than a little dated and don't look particularly good.

Cool. That's good to hear about the 3D resin.

If you do get the Last Sword models, I'll be excited to see them. I've been eying them for a while now. :)

Slight update, have been trying to figure out exactly what my basing scheme will be. After some trial and error and navigating my way around some products I've never used before like texture paint and water effects, here's where I've ended up.

The goal was a sort of jungle/swamp mix. I used Vallejo Dark Earth texture paint for the land and Vallejo Still Water for the.. well, water, after doing a blend of blues and greens beneath. I added a tuft to the water and the plants on the land are cuttings from a fake plant from IKEA that I've painted over.

Now to do something similar over everything else!

A good looking base, looking forward to seeing more :)

Base looks fantastic and a really tight paint job on the skink. Awesome.

Hi folks, been making progress in my skirmishers! Going to outline the process here, mostly for my benefit so I can refer to this again later as I am very forgetful.

I took a pencil and sketched the rough shape on the tray and bases of where I wanted the land and water to be, stuck a few bits of cork down as rocks, then went over that with texture paint. I did a couple of applications if this as there is some shrinkage as it dries. Whilst drying I coated the cork rocks with pva to seal them.

I didn't take a photo of the next few steps as this was all done in one sitting, sorry!

I drybrushed the texture paint with Screaming Skull and then lightly with Pallid Wytch Flesh before hitting it with some Agrax Earth Shade and an Agrax/Biel Tan Green mix. Athonian Camoshade would work instead but I didn't have any. Then I brought that back up with a light drybrush again.

I painted the water with Incubi Darkness and then blended it to a mid-tone green (I used Waaagh Flesh but any will do) near the shore. I mixed some black with the Incubi to make the middle of the water a bit darker.

I painted the stones with Dawnstone and drybrushed with Administratum Grey. I washed them with the same as the textured surfaces and then did an edge highlight with Administratum as well.

Finally, I added the water texture to all of the painted areas and up a bit onto the land as well. I did a couple of layers of this as again there's some shrinkage as it dries. I might do one more again but it looks pretty good right now. Just needs some tufts and plants and it's done!

Holy Cow! I love it! The bases fitting exactly into the movement tray is inspired.

Very nice layout. This is the great thing of unit trays like this one. Very much space to dish out a theme to the army. Almost straight up terrain building ;)

Grrr, Imrahil

Thanks for the kind words folks!

Tray and bases are now finished, just need to stop procrastinating and paint all of their shields. Then I have my Cohort, Kroxigor and heroes to base. Will put a bit of water on those but not to the same extent as this. :)

That's 500pts of Lizardmen for Warhammer Armies Project finished! We're all a couple of months behind but finally getting somewhere.

PXL_20220427_211802346.jpg

What should I do next? We'd originally planned on growing by 250pts every month but as we're behind we might try and jump another 500 as soon as we can to hopefully catch up a bit. Feel like I need to get some Saurus on the go at least.

They look great all together! I think its definitely time for some Saurus :)
