GW News: LAS VEGAS OPEN 2025

I personally like faction terrain. That's how we get cool terrain pieces like this:

That's not faction terrain though. That's warcry :p.

Anyways, the faction terrain looks cool. But they're all disconnected one-off pieces. You can't really build a landscape out of them without some significant kitbashing. Even for that warcry piece, sure it looks cool, but you can't fill a table with just those.

I thought the LoTR terrain did pretty well. Those Rohan houses seem to be pretty popular as far as I can tell.

To a point... GW still ditched them for a while until they brought them back in the War of the Rohirrim boxed game as far as I recall.

Close enough?

That just means we need GW to release more Lustrian faction / warcry terrain. Enough that we can fill a table with it.

@Canas

I was thinking, what if GW shifted to releasing more generalized all purpose terrain and scaling back faction terrain to just Lustrian stuff. Good compromise? :woot:
Honestly, just getting generalized terrain and scaling back faction terrain in general wouldn't be terrible :p

So what kind of generalized terrain are you looking for? Aren't most old kits that were viewed as "generalized" actually Empire or the like?

At least TOW has some of the old terrain/scenery kits back. But they're all "online only."

Sadly most of them are, yes, and to be fair, the vast majority of the buildings are Empire-themed which was a flaw with earlier editions of Fantasy back in the day as much as it is now. Plus, I don't see GW champing at the bit to make new terrain for TOW right now.

Generalized as in it can be used to build a fortress/city/farm/whatever and fill a (chunk of a) table.
So generic buildings basicly. Houses, towers, fortified walls, factories, etc.

So for example, the Rohan stuff for LOTR. Its a bunch of generic houses, so you can put a couple down without it looking weird. There's some walls and towers to make fortifications. And it's fairly straightforward to bash 2 models together to create a big house, or to make some simple terrain yourself like fences, a well, a shed etc. to flesh things out. It's very straightforward to build a village. Sure, it's going to be a Rohan themed village. Or maybe a "human" village if you throw in a gondor building or two. But at least it's a whole village and not just a bunch of random pieces of terrain.

However, in AoS we get stuff like a magma forge, or a charnel throne, or our realm engine.
You can't build a village/city/whatever out of those. The best we can do is just a random collection of nonsense.
Hell, most AoS terrain is so unique that even putting down multiple pieces from the same faction quickly looks weirds (e.g. 3 charnell thrones next to eachother looks kinda dumb)

So yeah sure, practically speaking it will probably be specific to some faction (let's face it, probably the humans/sigmar), or maybe a handfull of factions (give each grand alliance some generic terrain, maybe with some small addons? E.g. chaos terrain with some bits to theme it for each major god?) since selling enough scenery to build cities for 30+ factions isn't going to be feasible. But it'd be nice to be able to build cities/forts/villages/whatever.

Thank you for correctly using "champing." ;)

I wonder if GW could make $$ by producing realm-specific terrain/scenery? Aqshy fire-themed scenery, Ghur-themed scenery, etc. I think there are already 3-D printed sets out there that could work for this.

Imho, what they should do is sell generic bits and pieces, themed either around grand allegiance or around realms, that can be configured in many ways.
The 40K terrain that they used to have much more off was great for this. You could reconfigure the bits easily to create various buildings (e.g. vary the amount of floors, how wide it is etc.)

Theming it around realms or grand allegiances seems easiest, and probably should be profitable.

However, the biggest problem is that people simply don't need that much terrain. And you're not going to convince someone to just build a second table in the same way that they can be tempted into building a second army. So while it should be profitable, it probably isn't profitable enough to interest them I guess.

Of course a LOTR human character who isn't even in the films gets a plastic model before Hobbit characters like Dain and Thranduil :shifty:.

GW's LOTR human obsession continues.
In fairness, LoTR is generally rather human & Orc focused. Everyone else is kind of secondary to them.

Indeed it is, that's principally why I rate the LoTR story and films as being inferior to those of the Hobbit. I'd much rather enjoy battles between proper fantasy races on both sides, with humanity playing a comparatively insignificant part, than the nauseating narrative of LoTR glorifying the approaching Age of Men.

My complaint is toward the blatant favouritism the Middle Earth team is showing toward LoTR over the Hobbit and the Middle Earth 'EU' in their releases of models for the SBG.

Not that I care about the SBG anymore, (which will suck hard so long as the crappy 'Warband' army list selection format remains) but I do care about Middle Earth model releases for use in War of the Ring.

Look on the bright side, it could have been Vampire Counts for TOW (but no other hope for additional armies... just the VC). Then you'd be really ticked off.

Meh, it's not like the hobbit goes super heavy on fantasy races either. At least not as factions.
In general, the lotr/hobbit stuff is pretty grounded for fantasy. With the proper fantasy being mostly background, or long lost myths/history.

What's wrong with the warband stuff? I thought SBG had relativly reasonably list building.

.... well thank god it's not yet more vampires :p
