Dude, that sucks. My grandmothers were both awesome cooks. Dad's mom (Bohemian descent) was the master of the kolachkie (I have yet to get her recipe to work - pretty sure she left something out on purpose), and my mother's mom was the cook who hosted all of the holiday dinners for a reason!
