A quick update on the Skink skirmisher movement trays. The trays are assembled, it's now time to sand them to give them a nice smooth finish.

Step #3 Sanding

Another quick update on my Skink Skirmisher movement trays. I'm planning on adding rare earth magnets to the bottom of all my Lizardmen bases (my WoC already have them). So I need some metal on my movement tray so my skinks will magnetize to them. I cut the squares from ventilation duct sheet metal, and I use LePage "No More Nails" to glue them to the tray.

Step #4 Adding in sheet metal squares for magnetization (my least favorite part of the project)

Here is my woodwork story: i ordered skirmish bases at warbases.co.uk :)

My last run in with wood (actually rotan) ended with heavy antibiotics, xrays, and a lot of gross stuff. And i wasnt even trying to make something, i just went for lunch.

Step #5 Gluing the rare earth magnets to the underside of the tray
(just a pair of magnets for now since I plan to use these trays for plastic skinks; if I ever choose to use them for my metal camo skinks, then I'll add another pair of magnets)

Once the glue dries, the trays finished!

Not much, i just bumped a rotan chair my foot. Thought i just cut my self, but after like three weeks a 4 cm long an 5 mm thick splinter came out. Still really cant believe you can get a splinter this big in to yourself without seeing anything.

Very true!

The injury I told you all about was one of my minor ones, I've lost the top off a finger, nearly cut my thumb off, the list is endless, not all done working with wood, I had a aluminium splinter once that went in the palm of my hand and came out the opposite side, that hurt like hell pulling it out.

That's too funny. I be honest, some of the more dangerous power tools freak me out a bit. All the tools I use are on the safer side (scroll saw, drill press, dremel/rotary tool). These tools can hurt you no doubt, but they don't remove fingers like a table saw would.

Ouch... reading about your aluminum "splinter" made me cringe!

Speaking of power tool safety, you guys have to see this (if I ever got a table saw, this is what I want)...

That's an interesting idea and something I've contemplated doing. It would definitely speed things up immensely. I may switch to this strategy someday, but for now I haven't because it does have a couple of downsides...
  1. The wood-to-wood bond is much stronger than wood-to-metal. This really makes no legitimate difference, since this is not a load bearing bond, but in my warped little cold blooded mind it makes me feel better knowing the bond is unbreakable.
  2. Wood glue is easier and cheaper to work with than the stuff I use to bond the metal to the wood.
  3. When sanding the sides of the piece to a smooth finish, the metal would be problematic if is wasn't 100% flush with the two wood pieces. If that were the case, I'd have to file it down (rather than using sand paper on wood), which is a slow and more work intensive process.
But as you suggest, it does have its advantages too, time saving being the most significant! I may one day switch over. Thanks for the suggestion!
 
for wood to wood contact...
I suppose it could be slightly smaller than the wood,
and either add small strips or hollow out one of the wood pieces.
but then it probably isn't saving as much time...
 
That's an awesome tool for table saws. My father-in-law is a professor in Graphic Design at Auburn University and makes a lot of kinetic sculpture pieces mostly using wood and has an amazing crafting shop in his back yard. He has one of these on his table saw. He has demonstrated how quickly it stops to me before as well. It really scares you when it kicks off! He said that you really go through some saw blades with it though. I guess it only makes sense, but that is a perfectly acceptable trade off in my opinion.
