I can play games at either end of the spectrum. With my friend, we used to play the strongest lists we could, and those were good games. Against my wife, I try to avoid playing my WoC because they are too strong.HOORAY!
For the record, I freely admit that I have a lore-related and power gamer dislike of the High Elves. They are a VERY powerful army and have a lot of very awesome units and rules.
However, first I hate "gamey" players and do my best to avoid them (what's the point of playing if you're both not going to enjoy yourselves?). OP armies do represent a bit that for me. Second, I tried reading up on the lore of the High Elves when I was looking for another army and the more I read, the more I disliked them...
That is my number one factor when deciding to collect an army or not.For me, I have to have some affinity for the army to want to play them
I prefer having a mix of armies across the power levels. It's fun being spoiled for choice with the WoC, but it is equally fun trying to figure out how to make Tomb Kings work. My CD and LM are somewhere in the middle of the pack, while my WoC and TK occupy the opposite ends of the spectrum.I don't really care about the power level (which is why I ended up with Tomb Kings!).
Random mathematical chance. Given enough time, it is bound to occur! It always freaks me out when you agree with him... (kidding!!!)
I find the WE to be a finesse army. In the right hands they are devastating, but in the wrong hands they can very badly under perform. I feel that the DE and HE are both stronger armies overall, but interestingly, in a head to head match the WE counter them both very nicely. All three Elf armies are very powerful and in terms of a good army to choose to play with, all good choices.
