Interesting to say the least. What seemed to be their downfall?
They are close in terms of damage output.

Grrr, !mrahil

I'd say what directly did them is was their lack of command. The Trolls kept losing combat by a single point, which stems the Savage Orc's +1 static combat resolution via their standard bearer. In terms of wounds, the Trolls were out damaging the Orcs, albeit by an extremely tight margin.

Additionally, if the Trolls got to strike before the Savage Orcs the winner would flip instantly.

Lastly, consider that if the Trolls ever won a single round of combat, the Savage Orcs would lose their Frenzy and eventually the battle.

Ok, good to know.

I thought so as well, but in other match-ups striking last didn't seem to let them down this much.

This is one I also figured out myself ;)

That's true. In this case, the wounds inflicted were extremely close and the Savage Orc Big'Uns are fairly cheap. This meant that the Savage Orcs actually had superior numbers in terms of wounds (40 vs 39). The poor Trolls couldn't even claim steadfast.

We now move on to the next portion of our analysis. We pit each of our four contestants against one another!

Well Warriors with the mark of Khorne just bottom-line suck.
If you were to disregard the head-to-head battle between Tzeentch marked warriors and Nurgle marked warriors the Tzeentch warriors would barely outperform the Nurgle warriors, but the Nurgle warriors seem to have more Massive victories as well as Minor Losses. Tzeentch on the other hand has more Minor Victories, but fewer Minor Losses.

Chaos Trolls are very good, just wonder what their downsides are?

Agreed. They are by far the worst of the group. No doubt about it. A point sink.

In this analysis so far (I may do one last matchup, plus a conclusion looking at some external factors), I'd say we can't claim a significant difference in terms of superiority between Nurgle and Tzeentch. They kept swapping places throughout the analysis. Their relative pros can cons are very matchup specific, and unless this sample wasn't representative of the WHFB game at large, I'd say they are largely equal to one another.

Their downsides are:
  • stupidity and poor leadership - if their leadership source is killed or out of range, they become essentially useless
  • vulnerability to Flaming Attacks - if you give their opponents the (very accessible) Banner of Eternal Flame, the results will change drastically

Those are two very notable downsides. As a Troll player, if you can supply them with a leadership boost and away from Flaming Attacks, they are one of the very best units in the game. However, if you fail in either endeavor, they very quickly become a liability. So the Trolls have a huge upside, but it is mitigated (at least somewhat) by a huge downside.
