8th Ed. Which 40K army do you enjoy collecting and why?

Come play Horus Heresy, where you can run that kind of army.
It's funny I am considering life after old world as our club is quite tenuous

I find it interesting that nearly all rankings of supported GW games has 40k at the bottom.

I think it's mostly a case where the more you branch out into other tabletop games the more you're likely to see the flaws in vanilla 40k as a game. Likewise if you've been in the hobby-space long enough.

Never actually collected it but I wanted to put together a Lost and The Damned force when Eye of Terror was released oh so long ago. I love kitbashing and converting, which is why I wanted to do that.

I did that... and then I got to watch as GW slowly pecked the army list to pieces over several editions... Vraks was a decent substitute for 2 editions and then it all fell apart :(

Long ago I wanted to collect a Dogs of War army, but GW stopped supporting it. I still have a fair few Regiments of Renown. Some assembled, some in the box.

Maybe The Old World will bring them back.

If there is one thing that I absolutely do not want to see return as-is to TOW, it's the Dogs of War. A horribly-executed idea from GW back in the days of 5th Edition, that gave birth to the worst non-End Times Warhammer Fantasy lore to exist.

However, if you're really itching to try it, the recent War of Settra's Fury Arcane Journal for TOW has introduced a sandbox Border Princes-themed army list that allows Empire and Bretonnian units to be mish-mashed together and for Mercenary units from various main faction army lists to be added in too. To be honest I think this is a much better interpretation of the concept in the first place, as it's more creative and allows you to kitbash your own army that follows the wargear guidelines of the different units.

Unfortunately the list even includes a nod toward the horrible Dogs of War lore by allowing you to choose to theme the army around a Tilean Merchant Prince (which is great if you actually like that side of the lore).

But don't they have a loyal following? I have seen several people on here speak very fondly of them. It might draw more people into The Old World.

A very small but strangely loyal following. If the army is their thing, good for them, they can play it in 5th Edition or use it with the Border Prince Army of Infamy in TOW. Though I personally think that reintroducing them back as a whole faction, with their cheesy premise and lore included, would lower TOW's quality as a serious setting just as the original idea did.

Plan A was to run with the unofficial Dogs of War list and mix and match other models in to try to find similar historical minis to Tilean pikemen

Plan B was to make an Empire army themed around an Averland border province with a lot of mercenary units, essentially using my limited RoR as unit fillers and flavor. I was going to throw in an unit of Empire themed Ogres and Empire themed dwarves. My main gaming friend and I pretty loose on the rules, so he'd be okay with me taking a unit of ogres. But if I found a more hardnosed opponent, I could use an occasional ogre as a unit filler in a block of halberdiers or spearmen. And I don't anyone would mind dwarf crossbowmen if they filled in for human crossbowmen.

But my Empire and Dogs of War units have been collecting dust. I still do play actual games Warhammer, but not very often since my Scarterra passion is all consuming. I don't get a lot time to paint and glue models. So maybe having three WHF armies is too much. Obviously I am Lizardmen forever and I put a lot of effort into my Vampire Counts conversions, so I can't drop them.

I thought about selling my Empire and Dogs of War models (Plan C), but at this point I'm not hurting for money, so I'm hoarding them like a dragon.

My local mini scene is pretty much "40k or nothing", so that's why I was thinking of starting a 40K army. There's a local 40K escalation league starting in January, so maybe I can start a new army, but a reasonable quantity of models and finish most (not all) of my models before buying more models.

How is it that in a thread about 40k armies, the last page is about TOW? o_O

well, i'll live with it ;)

Probably best to give it a pass, TOW needs all the discussion and support it can get on the forum. :D

...also Dogs of War kind of came back in the form of the Renegade Crowns list in Settra's Fury
