Working on my lizardmen collection after some years away mostly for the relaxation and hobbying. This includes a mix of newer models and giving a fresh coat of paint to some of my earliest stuff. Here's what I was working on over xmas. Old prophet of sotek. Oxyotl Priest and handlers Ancient stegadon with skink chief. The whole gang. Currently working on some jungle swarms, and the new start collecting set. Need to go back and finish the bases cause I always run out of steam when i get to the bases bad habit
Wow, I like the stegadon!. It looks great! What´s the skin colour? I also really like the oxyotl. Keep pics coming!
Nice, I love doing the bases as it completes the model but it can get tedious after one or thirty With the starter set any ideas on colour scheme and what your building, Carny or Trog?
Stagadon is abbadon black, AB/DG, Dawnstone grey, DG/white, and white. Then wazdaka and wild rider red for the red highlights I waffled a lot but I built a troglodon, I strongly dislike the albino thing so I'm doing something a bit more colourful (pics soon almost done). I've been playing around with the saurus on foot and have maybe started narrowing in on a colour scheme I'll post a prototype with the trog soon. Thanks for the kind words everyone .
Was inspired by the okapi https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/18/Okapi2.jpg and some other stegs I'd been looking at. Sometimes I think it feels a bit over painted (originally all the scales were red but that was awful) but I like all the effects so I'm pretty happy with it.
OK so current projects. My troglodon is pretty much done (minus the base cause traditions!) and I am pretty happy with it. I didn't want to entirely ditch the pale death fluff so i tried to keep a good chunk of him bone whites. As for the rest I really wanted to experiment with some emerald greens and while I was looking for inspirations I looked at the MTG card hydra omnivore which most directly inspired the colours. http://orig15.deviantart.net/bb0c/f/2011/164/c/1/hydra_omnivore_by_velinov-d3isnau.jpg I'd bought genestealer purple before settling on the redder magenta of screamer pink but it still worked well for the skink's scales which i love. Other projects I have saurus new and old I'm either working on or thinking about (old saurus are half done from a previous return to the hobby :/ ) I always liked the idea that sotek should be represented by a bluer crimson and chotek a warmer vermillion so I'm experimenting with the magentas on my new saurus with a fairly standard turquoise and deep blue scale system. Still debating schemes for my old saurus but i want them in a condition i can be proud to leave on a shelf. I have 3 units of old saurus models (20,21, 30) simmering on my back burner. I'm also working on some swarms from the contents of 2 of the old lizard swarm bases and the snakes from 2 sets of saurus cavalry. Thinking 3 models to a base looks swarmy but not too crowded which gives me 6 bases. Tehenhauin needs some friends after all. My prophet is done and here are some of the lizards I've been working on in my spare time between projects. Saurus cavalry are on the back burner till I finish some other things. I'll probably try that lustria undergrowth texture next time I grab supplies and see how I like that for my neglected bases. I also want to grab some bases for my swarms (missing a couple), old gen stegadon who never had a base and my old slann who is also on my painting back burner and who's 2 cavalry base system I never liked. I'll just end this off with my old stegadon that i'm reasonably happy with and the salamanders that go with the handlers from earlier.
Love your okapi-inspired paint scheme on your Stegadon, its color scheme is very striking. I have saved a picture for myself, keep up the good work!
Hitting a snag where I can't find an effect I like for the scales on my saurus's back. I'm reasonably happy with the warrior (I have 6/12 painted like this) but I can't find something I really like for the veteran. At least the skin and face are popping. :/
Hmm... Maybe a red throat and chest... Or lets say redish... Like the silverback gorillas... Just not on the back... And not silver...
I think it looks excellent the way it is. I f I was you I would´t add many different colours because if you do the mini will look very divided. I would put more of that purplish colour down the scales, like you did with the face. It looks really good so far!!
Reverse the colours on your vet, red scales with blue spine that way they will look cohesive but different. Very good point made by @Jorgik too many colours and your model will look disjointed, I tend too stick to 5 colours but it is entirely up to you.
The red definetly continues down the throat a bit it's just shadowy in the pic . Don't worry you two I have not gone so far off the deep end XD. Just trying to find a colour I like so there are a few colours in different patches at the moment :/ This is temporary though. I do love how its going and the screamer pink down the scales is tempting. What I'm actually trying to find is a way to keep the red/pink popping on a few areas to draw the eye and not over whelm it. I think I mentioned above that I tried my stegadon with all red scales and hated the effect because it kind of stood out too much. I guess I'm looking for something that contrasts the skin doesn't clash too much with the pinks or draw too much attention away from the face. Maybe that means I just want more blue and I need to go look through some paint guides for a blue i'm happier with then the ones on the warriors.. :/ Stegadon was once patches of green, brown and red as I tried to find something I liked. I'm just feeling the same creative frustrations and needing to vent some XD.
Progress is... probably not as fast as I would like. Couple small updates though. I settled on a dark teal for my hero, feels a tad uninspired but I think it's a fair effect. The small 12 lizard unit is also coming along and I've begun work on weapons and equipment. My painting as been vastly improved by the creation of a wet pallet (Tupperware, paper towel and baking parchment). Finally all my mixed highlights aren't drying out after a model or two. It really sped things up. I've also ordered one of my favourite out of print models I never bought so I'm waiting for that to come. I doubt anyone else has the love for it I do but I'll post picks when I gets here. In the mean time I'm not running out of work. My greater 5th edition model collection needs work before I'll be happy to add them to a shelf.
Package arrived today full of something I haven't seen in a long time... blisters! And my favourite out of print model I never owned the Champion Javelin Skink I don't think anyone else has the same love I do but I'm really glad I got this one. They're on my back burner for now but I have 21 metal 5th ed Javelin skinks. Going to paint them up with a 5th ed kroxigor or 2 at some point
