Wargames Atlantic Roman heads on dark age archers from gripping beast.

Have to get as much value out of the Roman box as I can.

A good use for those spare Roman heads.

A pity those Gripping Beast archers are so monopose, fine for mass battles where you want them all facing in the same direction and doing the same stuff, but not good for skirmish gaming where you want them to be more poseable.

The Wargames Atlantic goths are great for the posability aspect.. Only 3/5 bodies on the sprue can be archers though. You could technically make the other 2 slingers, and just build two ranged units.

I do like the monopose stuff though, and it has its place. When you need 40 dudes, but only 15 or so are on the flanks and need to look like they are doing something. Boom, blocks of monopose guys in the center.

It's great for massed ranged units, like these archers eventually will be, too.

That's certainly one of two options I've been considering to make archers for my Welsh, alongside the Victrix Dark Age Archers set which allows you to make all archers if you wish.

Oh yes, the Gripping Beast ones do have their niche as I myself mentioned, but it's not a niche that I will be investing in personally.

So I just ordered the first bit of stock for the upcoming landskneckt ogres from Wargames Atlantic. I scored myself 3 boxes as well.

Expect a handgunner ogres regiment with a couple of heroes.

16 more Romans, added to centurio II.

I've discovered lowered spears do not like the legs of preceding ranks. For display purposes, I will be sourcing a set of "spacer bases", which will help me add in combat vignettes.

Went back through your blog and noticed this chap, curious that you gave him a Persian head and shield - is he going to be a Parthian, in line with the upcoming Cataphracts?
no, that was something random i stuck together before i figured the roman project was going to go full-bore.

Also, i only occssionally get a, well, craving, to paint cavalry. Normally its a chore for me. so i ran with it.
