I'd prime everything black and then work up from there I think, for the lightest colours I would go up through grey into white for the lightest highlights. Basically thinking something like a reasonably high contrast B&W photo.

The original thought was going art noir style like in certain comic books, where they only use pure black and white, but didn't think that would translate well into miniatures, so then developed it into having tones going through from the black to white.

I think it'd look good and very stylized, so it'd need a model that it'd work with. Something that'd make it obvious it was intentional I suppose.

Are you thinking sharp angular or smooth gradual?

Sharp angular 40k, smooth gradual skinks maybe?

Reading this last posts here I got the idea of a skink or saurus converted into a Casablanca style... like hat, trench coat, maybe cigarette and stuff... painted in the "original colors" of the movie...
Or maybe any other kind of 1920s mafia conversion...

Ah that makes sense, it looks great!

Necrons would be good, but what about eldar? One of the craftworlds (Ulthwe I think) has colors that are black and white but lots of other colors on their aspect warriors, like blues, greens, and reds. A unified eldar army, with JUST black and white and only minor additional colors would look fantastic. Especially some harlequins I think.

Or maybe dark eldar? Their jetbikes are cool, mostly the only thing I think is cool about their army.

I was just looking at Harlequins rules and their general persona and think that a purely black and white set of harlequins would look great.

I will do some list building tonight and see what options there are for a pure Harlequin force... The only hesitation I have is that painting all those diamons might send me insane. Instead I am thinking replacing the traditional diamonds with something more freeform, perhaps vines with thorns on (brambles? or something?) entwined wherever the traditional diamonds would be.

Something about painting thousands of diamonds really makes me think I would go insane.

Uncle Duncan put out a great tutorial on the Harlequin diamonds, and orks could be fun to do all black and white considering how bright and colourful they usually are.

Agreed. The vines do look good on some of them.
Some inspirational photos after searching this theme.

Beautiful harlequin, all "greyscale," also love the tiny green mask detail. Found here.

I really liked this ranger, especially his cloak, reminds me of something like what @Oldblood Itzahuan did for his star-lizardmen.

This one departs from the theme a bit, but the vines in the search brought up this eldar army half-converted with tree-people parts. This one looked really nice with the birch wood. I also liked the raven.

Some more interesting pics from my computer:

Really good looking tanks, "army" coloring almost, very urban

    I completely forgot about orks.

Orks are awesome too, they are currently my xenos race of choice.

Hmmmm... not a 40K person but that birch wood style Eldar made me think about trying such a thing for a few Sylvaneth units....

Birch-treemen units are my favorite looking units in a wood elf army. My brother has a unit of dryads painted that way, they are my favorite unit to face off against in his force (style wise of course :D)

Nice, yes. Definitely have something in mind along the lines of the first dude there.

I like orks in theory, but I think once I got to painting them I'd not really enjoy it. Their tech is all very worn and shabby looking... Though that might be fun to paint.

That's my fave part about orks, tons of weathering, heat staining, broken equipment, and rust. When I first started looking into 40k I painted up some of my friends orks fort them and they were an absolute blast to paint

They are cool and if you have not already try to get a look at the forgeworld masterclass books vol1 and 2 they have loads of weathering tips etc.

One is this they paint a land raider bucket in tan then spray it with hairspray then paint over it then take a stipple brush and dip it in warm water then stipple the bucket the water dissolves the hairspray giving a chipped/weathered look, I have both books really good if your into 40k.

I've thought about it and taken ideas on board.

    Harlequins.

    Monochrome.

One piece of red flair like the mask, weapon etc.

    White rimmed bases.

Troup name: The Death Masque (obviously)

Thoughts? Have I gone mad? It sounds like such a cool idea in my head...

Not sure what to do about the diamonds yet - might give them a crack and see if they drive me mental. I think if I am working with black and white they're going to be easier to touch up and get looking right. But doing that many diamonds might drive me round the bend.

Tempted to go with something else, like skulls.
