Tonight is hobby night, I intend on getting the deathwatch all built and glued. I'm done wasting time magnetising something that'll just be for display cabinet use soon. Then I'll blast down some base colours and see where I am at.
As for what I am actually going to play, I keep going round and round in circles, so I'm just going to wall of text my thoughts to see if they make any sense;
Necrons
Pros
Quick to paint and look unified on the table.
Seem quite resilient and have a few options for different builds from the reading I have done.
Cons
I feel thematically they are quite bland. I don't really get their motivations.
All their units look pretty much the same.
I haven't seen many options for cool conversions (please show me some!)
Harlequins
Pros
Thematically quite interesting.
Look pretty cool.
Cons
Seem like one trick ponies.
Going to take forever to paint, also don't think they'll suit my scruffy/not clear painting style very well.
Can't find many female eldar bodies to use for conversions (really want an all female masque)
Death Korps of Krieg
Prons
Look super cool.
Should be quick to paint to a tabletop standard, they should fit my painting style quite well.
Some very cool conversion opportunities / proxy parts available from other manufacturers.
Cons
Just all the infantry to paint...
Expensive. (Not really a con, just means it'll take me longer to collect while avoiding wife aggro)
I'm currently trying to avoid making any decisions on how things play in 8th, as we don't really know. I've read the rules but that's about it... Until we see things in practise it's a hard call to make.
I think I am going to paint a harlequin masque as a display project. Probably not feeling them for actual playing on the tabletop. I'll probably wait until there's a suitable painting competition to enter them in before I tackle that project - but it's one I definitely want to tackle.
I'm kind of leaning towards Death Korps right now.
