Flash Back post (maybe I should make a Flash Back Friday post a weekly thing? Yes, I know its monday lol)! Two years ago this week I began working on my third model ever, my first Troglodon and officially my first Kitbash ever! This model would have 3 different bases and is still possibly my favorite model Ive ever done, definitely my top 3 or 5. Although a few small touch ups have been made on the Troglodon, he is largely still the original paint job i did 2 years ago, which i ak very proud of still. Back then i had limited paint, knowledge, and real crappy photo taking skills; it's a lot of fun seeing how ive progressed over the last 2 years through all my photos. I think that's parts why i like taking so many WIP pictures. Hope you enjoy this little flash back through my hobby journey, real glad i found this forum back then, great friends have been made you all have been instrumental in my hobby and I just want to day thank you
So, I'm really really happy with how this piece has come out and is absolutely the center piece to my Lumineth at this point, and likely indefinitely. I've put a lot into this and I think it really shows, might be my best kitbash/conversion to date if I'm honest. I tried to push myself especially with my greenstuff work, I really wanted it to look as seamless as possible. There are a few imperfections, but I really don't care, it just looks so good to me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! The arrows i made going into the ogors came out really well I think and really adds to the base After some clean up and final look over I was able to prime everything except the Archer... and I absolutely love it! It looks like a real model to me, and i just love it. Haven't fully decided on a color scheme but I have an idea of a possible one, however, as a Vanari unit the armor will be black & orange. For the Hippogryph i am Leaning towards the Argent Dawn Hippogryph Color scheme from World of Warcraft. C&C welcome as always! Going to get some better pictures in the morning
I have begun painting the base Beginning with a cool stone color, i am thinking maybe marble for the stairs? Unsure at this point but we shall see, also debating the ogors and the color I want them. Any suggestions are welcome!
Small update on this beautiful WIP Wednesday! The base is beginning to take some sort of solid form, especially with the Ogors getting some color now. I've named this tribe of Ogors the "Sun Eaters", hence their yellowish skin color; they like to eat Hysh's light (yes, literal light). Slowly but surely, so fair (other than metallics) ive only used shades/contrasts with limited dry brushing on the rock
Made some decent progress today on the base, probably not as much as I could have, but a good solid amount. The stone is in a good place, although I may do another coat of wash. The bones look weathered, i dig it, but may add some white highlights. The Ogors need a bit more work, but are definitely on the right path. I wasn't sure of the yellow skin at first, but its growing on me and I think it'll play well with the darker scheme coming with the armor of the Hippogryph and such. I'm still undecided on how I want to do the stairs and inner area of the base. And because I just cant wait any longer... lol am starting the tedious process of under highlighting the feathers, fun times.... lol It looks greyer due to me turning the brightness down so the highlights of rhe feathers were more visible due to white on white (Corax White Primer with White Scar). After this I'll do a very light dry brush and then go from there! Thoughts, C&C always welcome
Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well Been working on the Hippogryph a bit, making some decent progress. All that I have so far is dry brushing (lightly) and very light wash, slowly building up the colors and a small pattern on the wings (or spots?). Im torn between a white/grey body fading into the brownish ends or going a more Painted Horse scheme like i did my original Dawnrider (pictured below). At this point I can go either way pretty easily. I am honestly tempted to color in the armor and decide based on that! I can see both patterns looking geat, so we'll see what happens. All in all some decent progress, going to work on the base a bit more tomorrow. Painted Horse Dawnrider:
Not finished with the color of the Hippogryph yet, but I wanted to color in some of the armor for a better look at the colors im building up against something other than white (as white is a core color in the Hippogryph at this point). Filling in some of the armor with my Vanari's Vengeance/Volcanic armor theme
You should do some instruction videos. Seriously. I for one would like to learn the techniques that you are using.
Thank you, that means a lot actually, Ive considered it but I just dont have the best set up (or equipment). I'm fiddling with the idea of tutorials once the office is cleaned and I have a more designated space again (Im at the kitchen table now, lots of noise etc). What specifically is catching your eye? Id be willing to do like a weekly hobby chat/video or something in discord and maybe help explain/show some stuff and just hang out? I know its not the same, but you're more than welcome to message me via discord or here with any questions! But yes, maybe in the future I will do some tutorials.
Not a whole lot done since the last post, but wanted to share the little bit. Primarily the armor a bit more filled in, and her up against two of my wardens, I think its going to look great with the reds, greens, etc added in. I have a goal to finish these Wardens by the end of the month, we'll see but that's my goal. I want to build my next 10 and finish them + the kitbash for July.
Tracing those lines! Starting my first 3 Wardens which when done will complete my first 5! Baby Steps, am I right?
Not sure how much you can tell on the pictures, but starting to slowly build in a little more red into the wings and other brown areas I'm going to need to go back over the white-ish areas on the wings gently again to bring it back out a bit, but over all looking good i think! Just dry brushing and wash thus far My Custom Vanari General is definitely coming along, this will be a lot of fun in Narrative play I also have the 3 wardens outlined and ready for the next phase of the plume and cloth parts! Cant decide if I should just continue on doing the outlines on the rest of the 10 or just finish these up. Momentum either way! They'll need some clean up, but that'll come later lol Good progress so far I think, and more to come tonight! Might jump into the voice chat in discord while I hobby, but we'll see Hope everyone is having/ had a great weekend!
Undecided on these base colors for the tabard + cushion/seat, going to keep going with it, if I end up hating it I'll paint over it with black or orange They are colors of my Vanari (plume + cloth areas) but not sure it totally works with the brighter colors, but shall see id when i darken it if it'll look better
Been making some good progress on the Hippogryph's armor, although I do need to work on its body some; notably the head. I have done work on the leg & chest armor, adding steel with silver highlights. Also adding color to the barding around the body that connects the armor pieces, originally going for a leather look when crafted it looks more like cloth now? After that I began filling in the leather armor on the chest, i need to add some highlights and more wash, but its coming along. The tabards draping over the side are my biggest issue, and I think it's the bright red. The tabard is the color of the Vanari Warden plumes, but i think with the brighter color of the body it doesn't totally work here. I am thinking of changing the colors to either black + orange (like the armor), changing the black pattern to yellow, or black + yellow. Haven't decided yet, going to sleep on it and decide tomorrow. Overall I think it's coming along great, just need to keep taking my time
