8th Ed. The BEST close combat units in all of Warhammer.

Round 12, Match #3 - Beasts of Nurgle versus Arachnarok Spider

Key rules in play:
  • Beasts of Nurgle: Daemon of Nurgle, Daemonic, Poisoned Attacks, Random Attacks (D6+1), Regeneration
  • Arachnarok Spider: Natural Armour (4+), Poisoned Attacks (Spider only), Stubborn, Venom Surge

View attachment 91698

Well what did we expect when the powerhouse Beasts of Nurgle take on the lowly Spider? Sorry spider fans ( @The Great White Lizard )

View attachment 91700

For record, the Beasts of Nurgle are currently on a tournament high 7 fight win streak! (even the K'daai Destroyer can't make that claim)

No, but no-one is close to the K'Daai on massive victories.

However, hooray for the wee Beasties!!!!

Yeah... the Destroyer has a whooping 10 Massive Victories. Next closest are the Beasts of Nurgle and the Chaos Trolls with 7 each (with the Chaos Trolls yet to fight this round).

I think what is more impressive is that the Destroyer is the only unit in the entire tournament that is yet to suffer a Massive Loss! !.png

Round 12, Match #4 - Skullcrushers of Khorne versus the Mournfang Cavalry!

Key rules in play:
  • Skullcrushers: Mark of Khorne (riders only), Brass Behmoth
  • Mournfang Cavalry: Thick-skinned, Ironfists
upload_2021-5-5_21-52-14.png

A very important and much needed victory for the Skullcrushers. Ultimately their superior set of attacks proved decisive. Their riders also got to strike before their opposition, allowing them to take down a Mournfang right out of the gate.

upload_2021-5-5_21-54-40.png

The Skullcrushers stay in the hunt for a podium finish. They are now in a three-way tie for 4th place with the HPA and Witch Elves, all at 5 points. If the Demigryph Knights win their remaining matchup massively, they too would find themselves at 5 points. The Witch Elves still have yet to fight this round, so they could still pull away from the crowd.

The race for third place is really heating up!! Will it be decided in the very last round of the tournament?

As for the Mournfang, after two straight Massive Victories, they have now sustained two straight Massive Losses. They have now sunk back down towards the bottom of the standings.

Grrrrrrr....

The Thundercats will return....

The Arachnarok never stood a chance against the things, losing combat by one and fleeing just adds insult to injury. I wonder how much better it would do if it had been in the bubble of an LD9 orc general. Interesting that the skullcrushers took down the mournfangs so easily, I expected it to be a closer fight.

... for another loss? :hilarious: (sorry, couldn't help it)

It would just take a bit longer. The Beasts of Nurgle were doing more damage and more importantly, they had a far larger pool of wounds. Even accounting for the unit's loss of effectiveness as Beast models are slain, the Spider stands no chance. In a protracted combat, the Spider would last about 3 turns... 4 tops.

Interesting that the skullcrushers took down the mournfangs so easily, I expected it to be a closer fight.
Yeah, it was pretty decisive.

  • better WS
  • more attacks @S5 (because the Ogre riders' S4 doesn't contribute very much in this contest)
  • Chaos riders getting to strike first

I don't see the HPA coming back up personally. I think it will win against White Lions, Hammerers and Soul Grinder then lose against Chaos Warriors, Beasts of Nurgle and the Savage Orcs.

Managed to fish this up from a while back. It's interesting to see some of the upsets that still remain in this tourney!

If you're referring to the WoC with MoN match-up, that's fair enough.

I think it's fair to say that they are a nasty pack of b*****ds, but they are not the best.

That said, this is the contest of champions and they are definitely up there.

Chaos Warriors have been a bit of a disappointment. I never expected them to be challenging for the top positions, but they have only managed to win 4 out of 11 matches. Plus, their remaining schedule doesn't look too promising. I can easily see 3 out of their remaining 4 matches ending up as losses.

Curious to see where they will end up when the tourney is finished. Can they hold their place or will they sink further? I definitely don't see them moving up in the standings.

Round 12, Match #5 - Chaos Trolls versus White Lions of Chrace

Key rules in play:
  • White Lions: Martial Prowess, Stubborn, ASF and ASL cancel each other out
  • Chaos Trolls: Regeneration
upload_2021-5-6_21-5-36.png

Troll Toll!! This one should come as no surprise. The Trolls already smashed the Executioners previously, who are a similar but better performing variant of the White Lions.

I know quite a few of you hate the White Lions, so this should be a satisfying result!

upload_2021-5-6_21-9-21.png

The Trolls extend their lead over the Witch Elves to 4 points, and now have to patiently wait to see if the Elven ladies can answer in kind. While the Trolls do enjoy a significant lead, we must factor in their upcoming K'daai Destroyer matchup into the equation.

As for the White Lions, they are now tied for third last overall, with a points total of -8. Who's happy to see them further falter?

HOORAY!

This almost makes up for the Mournful Cavalry... :(

I have seen a lot of hate talk towards them with their Banner of the World Dragon, but despite their banner they have only had 3 massive victories and for the rest (massive) losses.
It seems to me that either the hate for the banner is misplaced or the banner only provides victories over the favorited units of our members :p

Grrr, Imrahil

I think there's more of a dislike towards the High Elves arrogance and general whatever.

They are a VERY OP army. Banner of World Dragon is one of the most ridiculous items in WFB.

For very cheap cost, you get 2+ (2+!?!?!?!?!) ward save against any magic, magic weapons or magical attacks AND all units in 12 inches get Stubborn (the only thing is that any enemy also gets Stubborn).

So the dislike is Pointy Ears in general.
The Banner is cheap, but it hasn't proven it's points so far I would say.

For army matchups (outside this tournament set up) it certainly can be a pain in the a** but that is not what we are here for ;)

Mainly High Elves, I think. Wood Elves and Dark Elves somehow don't get so much hatred... Unless you are @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl on the Witch Elves ;)

I think that this contest has probably given you a bit of a skewed viewpoint on it, to be honest.

Think nullified magic phase for this unit. Think nullified Hero/Lords as their attacks against the unit gives them a 2+ ward save. Think of the amount of units that have magic attacks. Think of Dwarf cannons with runes that make them magic attacks. All Daemon attacks. A number of Undead units. K'daai Fireborn and Destroyer.

It doesn't make them invincible, but considering that most big baddies have magic weapons it's pretty potent.

If you think of the ramifications in a real-world battle, it's pretty flipping powerful.

Yep, I can see that.

That's not fair, they a few "regular" losses sprinkled in there! ;)

One of the very best items in the game.

Of note, it isn't all units within 12", it is only Dragons (friend or foe) within 12".

This 100% 98%! It does nothing against the K'daai Fireborn or the K'daai Destroyer. The K'daai do not have magical attacks. We have already seen this play out (and discussed) when the Destroyer throat stomped the White Lions earlier (complete with an Ivan Drago Destroyer meme!).

Aside from that, I'm in complete agreement with @Lizards of Renown . The BotWD has so many uses and any single one of them already justifies the cost of the banner. This tournament does not give a fair representation of its value. The tournament has no magic weapon wielding characters, or a magic phase, or miscasts, or magical shooting, etc.

Mainly High Elves, I think. Wood Elves and Dark Elves somehow don't get so much hatred... Unless you are @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl on the Witch Elves ;)
If nothing else, the man dares to be different! ;) LOL

For the record, both Dark Elves and Wood Elves are way cooler than High Elves!

HOORAY!

For the record, I freely admit that I have a lore-related and power gamer dislike of the High Elves. They are a VERY powerful army and have a lot of very awesome units and rules.

However, first I hate "gamey" players and do my best to avoid them (what's the point of playing if you're both not going to enjoy yourselves?). OP armies do represent a bit that for me. Second, I tried reading up on the lore of the High Elves when I was looking for another army and the more I read, the more I disliked them... For me, I have to have some affinity for the army to want to play them. I don't really care about the power level (which is why I ended up with Tomb Kings!).

Of note, it isn't all units within 12", it is only Dragons (friend or foe) within 12".

Ah. Whoops. The funny thing is that I didn't remember ANY Stubborn rule on the banner, so only noticed it when I re-read the item. But obviously mis-read this.

I stand corrected. (And HOORAY! for the stomping)

Yup. Brings a whole new meaning to our concept of a Deathstar.

If nothing else, the man dares to be different! ;) LOL !

It always freaks me out when you agree with him... (kidding!!!)

For the record, both Dark Elves and Wood Elves are way cooler than High Elves!

I like the lore of Wood Elves most, but I also couldn't really get into them.

All three Elf armies are very powerful and in terms of a good army to choose to play with, all good choices.
