I saw the pilot episode of Supergirl. I didn't label it as woke (though my guard wasn't up for wokeness), but I decided it was not worth watching.

The supporting cast seemed to be up of bland one-dimensional characters and the protagonist actress, Melissa Benoist, was not very compelling.

Even reviews from people who claimed to be fans of Melissa (mostly Glee fans that carried over to Supergirl) said she was a good supporting actress but couldn't carry a show as the lead.

I read some reviews that said after the first couple seasons, they rewrote things so Supergirl wasn't the main POV character, someone else was and Supergirl just was the muscle that did the superpower stuff while other characters carry the drama. The woke probably didn't help.

That formula can work, but it is hard. Example, Sherlock Holmes may be the main character but in the books and many of the film adaptations, the POV character is Dr. Watson.

I was really a big fan of Amazon's version of The Tick and was furious that the show was not renewed. But the Tick was the main character and Arthur was the protagonist POV character. That works because the Tick is funny and cool but is so one-dimensional (in a good way) that you really get better character arcs out of Arthur.

I do believe very strongly that it is easier to write a good Batman story than it is to right a good Superman story. In other words, when you have VERY powerful superheroes with very few limitations it is hard to write compelling stories without using hack contrivances and the CW writers just weren't up to the task of handling a power creep.

I would say I generally liked the Arrow better than I liked the Flash (though both shows became stale) and I found Supergirl unwatchable.

Along the lines of not handling a power creep, in the Flash, Sisco got powers and his powers kept growing. Later, he arbitrarily decided to give up his powers for no reason other than he was more comfortable without them.

I essentially saw it as, "My powers can literally solve every problem so I need to remove them because the writers are stuck on how to make future conflicts meaningful." That was lazy writing.

If anything Vibe's powers were safer than Flash's power in terms of Vibe never once had an issue with collateral damage. It was an act of supreme selfishness to give up his powers. Hypothetically, if his powers were out of control and in danger of hurting innocent people, then it would reasonable to give them up.

I guess at the end of the day, CW Arrowverse had bigger problems than wokeness. Though Batwoman was certainly woke to an absurd degree and wokeness accelerated their other problems.

There's at least hope in the world of animation that creators have finally realised that a good story and characters trump wokism:

Great to see Dreamworks cooking up a film that can be taken seriously again, it's been a while since they did so.

I believe it shifted woke a couple of seasons in, but once it did, it went hardcore woke.

This is a case of "It gets worse before it gets better."

Zaslov seems to want to remove wokeness.

Zaslov seem to wants to hit the reset button on the DC cinematic universe.

It takes about three years for a movie to go from being greenlit to showing up in theaters.

That means that even if Zaslov wants to change things in a way we like, he's got three years of movies in the pipeline with very large sunk costs in them.

In order to recoup the sunk costs, WB needs to make as much money from these movies as possible. That means Zaslov cannot admit that he is hitting the reset button on the DC cinematic universe because then none of the events of the movies matter and people won't go see the movies.

In a perfect world. Every superhero movie would stand on its own and have tie-ins to a larger universe/metaplot.

The Batman movie with Robert Pattinson was pretty good in my opinion. Not amazing, but I was entertained (maybe it helped that I had very low expectations so it definitely exceeded my expectations). I was pretty sure it wasn't going to get a tie-in universe and I was okay with this because the movie told a self contained story that was reasonably satisfying with minimal social justice propaganda embedded in it.

I'm willing to give him a chance, but in the meantime, these already greenlit woke movies need to fail hard. I thought the first Shazam was awful, but it made money. I'm curious to see how this one will do... but I won't be watching it.

Strange, the video's now gone from Critical Drinker's channel (for those of you who didn't see it, it was about the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish:

    Is YouTube's censoring to blame?

Maybe I'm the last horse to cross the finish line.

I always wonder how Kathleen Kennedy kept getting her contract renewed when she kept failing and losing money. A few of the pop culture video channels I watch have offhandedly mentioned that she probably has blackmail material on powerful Hollywood people and that is why she has as of yet been unsinkable.

That would explain how and why she was so chummy with one of Harvey Weinstein's assistants.

Game of Thrones level bs here.

    This may be controversial.

I support the legalization of marijuana because I don't think marijuana users should be thrown in jail. That said I don't think marijuana users should be allowed to produce animated shows.

    Also, Kevin Smith.

"but was well received by critics, getting a 83% on Rotten Tomatoes."
    :p

A pity critics don’t make audience, nor revenue.

I was on the fence on whether to post one of the Willow analysis videos here. I am a Willow fan. I am disappointed but not surprised this remake is awful.

On the plus side, it might be a good thing the show sucked. If they show was good I might have to sign up for Disney+.

I've never listened to critics since I first heard them all shitting on the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Those goons are literally paid to give their own opinion on films and TV, as we do on here, all because they did Mickey Mouse 'Film Studies' University degrees and are no good at anything else.
