9th Age Discussion of OpenHammer (ETC) and Ninth Age (Swedish Comp)

@Scalenex it's obviously a bit confusing, however I think more people are interested in the newly released alfa from Swedish Comp.
Since we're discussong that in this thread I decided to make this thread about both ETC and Swedish Comp.

Anyway if you haven't seen it check the current Alfa from the Swedish Comp guys. I think itll be more of your liking. They're still doing some "drastic" changes to the BRB, but not like the ETC one and theirr army book suggestions look like something most people wanted, HOWEVER, LM barely got touched and this is just the alfa so I suggest we could send your LM list to then, maybe all, but I want to prioritize our own army first and help them out.

You can find the alfa thingy on the first page in the OP. It's at the bottom of the post.

@Pinktaco, if you want to send it, that's fine. I don't know enough about what they are doing to contact them myself. You don't have to credit me, credit Lustria-Online. I factored in the opinions of at least five other forumites working on that.
 
Alright, I think the list is a very good first update that shouldn't get anyone worked up. I'll figure out who to contact unless of course anyone know anything about that?
 
I reckon you the one most enlightened about what's going on and where. So I'll say go for it Pinktaco ;)
 
Oh one thing I like about the new magic system:

The more mages you have the more your dispel value is raised. So say you have 4 lvl 1 mages you then have what is equal to a lvl 4 mage in terms of dispel power. So you're not screwed just because you took a lvl 2 and two lvl 1 mages (which would be tempting with tettoeko).

You're still weak in terms of actually casting a spell, but most people fear the dispel phase and I think that's been addressed.

That sounds a bit like 6th ed. Wasn't that basically how it worked back then?

I was a bit surprised by this.
  • no clarification of predatory fighter
  • no point reduction for the troglodon
  • no point reductions for most of our special characters (and a point increase for tetto)
  • etc.
It almost felt like they simply skipped our army.
 
Keep in mind that its still alpha, they will rework each army one at the time. The BRB changes like magic, items and such are a priority.

That's likely because they're not finished. There are still other things that needs to be addressed and with all said and done our army isn't a top priority because of how well balanced it is. We need minor tweaks and these tweaks are stuff we know, but also stuff I fear a stranger to our army would miss.

That's a good point. Hopefully they'll attend to it as they refine their rules. Lizardmen are pretty well balanced for the most part, but there are definitely a few items that need addressing.

The Skaven changes feel odd...

Skaven Slaves moved to special
No point increase for the HPA (the most broken monster in the game)

So how does it actually work, how are they considering going about the changes proposed?
It's great that we have made a submission to the guys attending the changes, perhaps this will give them something to think about. :)

HPA isn't actually that bad. They are a good example of a monster done right IMO.

That's very nice. I can see that people generally agree on certain things so overall I think we'll see stuff like PF working in second rank.

With that said I have some suggestions for you to add. I'll post them later.

It's way too cheap for what you get. Stubborn, regeneration, S/T6, impact hit AND thunderstomp and on top of that the "attacks" are flat out incredible. We can't take it with an Oldblood, we can't take it without the flaming banner (with many loses) and it comes with 6 wounds just because so we need an average of 120 poisoned shots to take it down.

Isn't it only like 225pts or so? Our own Stegadon is considered good and yet it doesn't do half of what HPA do.

I guess I look at it from the perspective of even an HPA was regularly left out of competitive skaven lists (in favor of cannon/doomwheel), but it had its moment to shine.

The only other monster that is even somewhat competitive is the chimera.

It might have been too cheap but it actual does something. It's actually worth taking. When so many monsters arent, I think that's quite a feat.

If we ever see a cannon change it'll be much too strong, but in 8th I always wished a Steg had a little more of the survivability an HPA has.

I don't think comparing it to a Steg is fair, as a Steg really isn't all that great.

Remove the Cannon issue and suddenly the HPA is super powerful. Considering everything else in the alfa list I see no reason not to expect a change to cannons.

I disagree to not compare the two. The ancient Stegadon is good in its own right. It has a very very powerful impact hit, so its still a treat in most games. The issue with HPA is that not only is it very very survivable, but it'll dish out a ridiculous amount of pain - for instance how about 3D6 S6 hits in your face? On top of impact hits and thunderstomp. Should one of those 3D6 hits actually wound you get -1 To Hit yay...
Its grossly overpowered for what you pay.

There are some very very bad monsters out there and the Stegadon certainly ain't "bad". It's perfectly average like the rest of any none character until in our book.

The chimera, Frost Phoenix and HPA are arguably better, which is why they should be more expensive.

Stuff like all other WoC monsters, all beastmen monsters the. Fire Phoenix, likely the big mammoth thingy from OK and the big spider from O&G need a point reduction to reflect their actual value and they're all likely worse than the Ancient Stegadon. That's a lot of monsters.

Then you have stuff like treeman who became awkward in the newest book, and the hydra who need the old regeneration.

Again if we compare the Steg to all monsters in the game it's actually a decent monster, not perfect like the fvcking chimera with its gazillion attacks at S6, regeneration, fly and flame breath just for gigglez, but still decent compared to a lot of other monster who will never see usage even if one were to remove the entire cannon issue.

With that said I wish the engine of the gods were like 30pts or so. I think 50pts is too much, but at 30 I'd definitely try it out some more.

Oh and if you wanna go in the "not all that great" area lets bring in the eternity champion of mediocre monsters a.k.a the troglodon. Boom talk about not being all that great :D

**edit** if we're talking monster I see no reason not to ccompare monsters to monsters. Some are better than others, but deep down they're still monsters who just want to come out to play regardless of whether or not it's fair!

It all depends on the monster's role in the army and what its cost is. I mean a stegadon with zero armor and ws 1 would be awesome if it where just 50 points.
