    Ha! :D

Well, I'm starting simple. I've bought a second hand Aleguzzler model and a whole bunch of different armour pieces. The idea is to change the armour pieces so they fit the gian and somehow come up with a theme by adding bits to the armour pieces. Then the painting should be interesting... but going with the same theme I'll use for my Chaos Dwarfs (look at the paint jobs of Order of the Obsidian Rose Drukhari).

So, staying simple, is probably the simplest kitbashing I could do, but hopefully goes well and I can build up a little bit of confidence in it.

Be gentle gentlemen! This is a first time modelling/kitbash attempt!

I absolutely love this. And honestly, some of the simplest kitbashes are some of the best. And your first is always special regardless of the future ones you'll make. My first Troglodon was my first kitbash, and all it is was adding the throne horn ornaments onto the legs and tail, giving it a thagomizor and protective leg spikes with gold base ornament/decoration. My most recent Seraphon kitbash, being skinks, are also a simple one just using Ripperdatctyl soears to make Skink Hoplites for my Homebrew. Point is, in my drawn out way (lol), is you gotta start somewhere and this is a perfect start.

I very much look forward to this project, keep it up. You're up for quite the journey my friend!

So I'm building and magnetizing the bases of the models I got over Christmas.

    20220115_102345.jpg

In doing so, I managed to snap the staff of my painted Hierotitan :( so I'm trying to magnetize it as it is REALLY weak (since you have to glue the two ends of the staff to the hand of the model).

I tried doing the magnets last night but this morning turns out I did one of them the wrong way round so they reject each other. @Warden you seem to be a dab hand at magnetization. Any words of wisdom for me?

Is it the basing magnets or the Hierotitan magnets you are struggling with? I saw someone use some old bits of sprue, wrap different coloured tapes around them, and place oppositely polarised magnets on the end to use as holders so you don't forget which way round they are.

For magnetised bases to store or movement trays I got a 1m long self adhesive ferrous sheet which either side of the magnet will stick to, if that's any help!

    They can be a pain.

I use a small hobby drill with these magnets. They work good for tiny arm joints like space marine weapons options; bigger stuff I use these instead. You can get them at lots of different hobby stores, Hobby Lobby is the chain close to me.

I usually only put on one magnet at a time, normally on the "trunk" of the mini first, then the arm.
    1. drill holes for magnet in space marine's arm/shoulder and torso/shoulder joints
    2. glue magnet in space marine's torso/shoulder joint
    3. let the magnet dry
    4. place second magnet on top of the torso/shoulder joint magnet to ensure polarization is good
    5. place a tiny bit of glue inside the hole you already drilled in the arm/shoulder
    6. push arm/shoulder onto the magnet that is sitting on the torso/shoulder
    7. remove arm piece so the magnet can glue
That looks really convoluted now that I have written it down :D

This is my method as well, this will always give you time to test the side of the magnet you need before attaching it.

I use a old piece of sprue and put 2 magnets in it mark one end B for Body and the A I think or X for arms / Xtremity , that way it works for everything what ever is more the body gets the B and the other part the X starting from the ground up to the tip!!

So it didn't go entirely as planned, but I'm sticking with it.

@Warden the idea to stick one magnet to one side, then once dry use it to position the other magnet was most helpful.

You can still see the magnet, but for a first time project I'm going to leave it. I should have ordered smaller magnets, but I wanted to use up those that I have.

From a distance it looks good, up close you can totally see it.

It is a good start for magnetizing. If you have a hobby drill in the same size as the magnet you can try to get the bottom magnet flush with the top of the hand. The staff itself us a little tricky, due to its girth.

But as you said, from a distance it looks good. So when playing it will nit matter ;)

You don't even need a hobby drill, I just use my power drill's 2mm bit (or whatever size you need) with my fingers and it does the job perfectly!

If you are trying to fix the staff you need to pin it. I've had this happen before and it is a simple fix.
    • drill a hole into both sides of the shaft (the diameter of the hole should be just big enough for a paper clip to fit, GW's hobby drill works perfectly for this)
    • cut a paper clip to length, so that it spans the combined depth of the two holes you drilled, (trail and error, keep cutting it down and dry fitting it until it is just short enough that the two pieces of the shaft come together)
    • use two-part 5 minute epoxy to glue the two pieces of the shaft and the inserted paper clip together.

If you do it right, it will form a bond that is many times stronger than the rest of the shaft. If you manage to break the shaft in the future, it won't be in this place. The key is to make sure that you center your drilled holes well and drill straight (so the drill bit doesn't come out of the side of the shaft). It is easily doable. I've reattached shafts that were significantly smaller in diameter than on your Hierotitan.

This is great advice. Thanks! :)

For storage purposes I'm gonna keep it like it is for now.
