I've got my scarvet BSB on my table...but it's rather daunting. I sat and thought of a paint scheme for 3 hours last night, with no settlement in sight :depressed:

Funny you should mention SeBM, as today is points update day! (every week on a Thursday i'll update scores) See the post below for the scores & cool funky graph with not many lines on it yet!
haha while i'd love to say that i'm hoarding masses of painted minis, the Swordmaster i posted earlier is the only thing i've finished. i blame my friend, who wanted me to help him with the co-op on Dead Rising 2. Who am I to say no to zombies? Finished last night though, so am pulling my finger out for this week though on the painting side. Brought some HE's in to paint at lunchtime, pending Chakax construction.

Painting is just so... unnecessary to me. I don't feel like I have the creative freedom I have when writing up backstories, modelling my units etc. Scar Veteran Xyz might have a cool background and ace modelling, but when you apply my mediocre painting skills, it's bound to just ruin it; as a perfectionist with mild OCD, it's harder when I spot that one of the bristles has gone off on its own and painted a faint line on a different part of the model. I will tell myself that nobody will see it, but I see it every time I look at the model, but if I paint over it then I get paint on yet another part, and it ends up as a huge clusterfeth.

I'm also not able to paint unless I made the scheme, only then does each model truly feel like it's mine.

Apart from simple block colours, i'm hopeless. I can't highlight (far too shaky, and my hand likes to randomly spasm whenever I really need to concentrate; also can never apply it right), I can't shade, blend, drybrush... The most advanced things I do are washes, and even they only bring out the errors I make during painting.

Basically, all my armies are destined to spend their lives largely unpainted unless i'm gifted with better skills at some point, because this practise-makes-perfect BS doesn't work with anything I do.

I understand your pain Khakorlot!!! My hands shake A LOT and I'm only 25, but it's been that way since i was 12. I like to joke about it saying that I shake equally on both hands so it doesn't matter but the truth is I've had to work around it. Some days I shake more, so I do stuff that don't require a steady hand. I've found ways to hold the miniature steady and my painting hand steady at the same time but I must always think about it and it kills me.

As far as painting technique goes, I've always loved painting miniatures (tanks, airplanes and warhammer). I really don't consider myself great or anything but I pride myself in the small improvements I make every time. I'm a perfectionnist and I would love my models to look incredible, but the truth is that I'll probably never win best painted army or anything.

My current goals are to put on the table an army I feel happy with in a decent amount of time and leave room for improvement as my painting skills increase. I'm working on 20 Saurus Warriors and right now I already see what I could do to improve them once I finish them (and some other models before reworking them too :D). In the end, painting my army makes me happy, if you feel frustrated about painting yours, I can totally understand why you'd rather play with unpainted stuff. In the end, it's a hobby with different parts and we get to do what we like the most, painting or gaming, or both!!!

I'm sorry if this turned out a long out of topic post, but I could totally relate to what you said in your post and felt like sharing my view on it.

So, what are you guys working on??? PICTURES PLZ!!! :D

Nice work on the update sevensevenare49, but you missed me, probably because my post was a link to my plog. I'll repost my test model here so you can award me my 0.2 pts :D

duly noted SeBm, edited the above post. I'm still 3rd because i earned those 0.2 points first haha.

I find that milk helps settle my shaking (don't ask me how or why, probably an old wives tale). And holding my breath usually helps, i learnt that from Metal Gear Solid.
You paint with both hands SeBM?

As a matter of fact I can, I regularly switch hands to do a lot of stuff. I'm a natural lefty who somehow learned to do a whole buch of stuff with his right hand as well. But that's not the real sense of the joke. I hold my miniature in my right hand and the brush in the left. Since both hands shake equally, it doesn't really matter does it :D :D.

are you my clone SeBM? Wouldn't say i'm natural left, but i do write left handed, but can do most everything else with both hands. eg. play cricket/baseball right handed, catch right, throw left, goofy Ice hockey goaltender but play out right handed. All over the shop.
would never try painting with my right though - feels.... odd.
Funny story, years ago i was cutting bread with my left hand and my mum commented that it looked like i was going to chop my fingers off (being the only left hander in a right handed family). So i switched to my right hand which freaked her out more because she was used to me using my left!

how many other righties/lefties do we have here?

Theres something funny going on here. I am also left handed. But other than writing the only things I do left handed are baseball and banjo (Only played once but thats how it went)
I encourage everyone to paint one model and get on the board :)

Khakorlot I know how you feel, untill I came to this site like 2 months ago I didn't even know there was a technique past painting. And it has been a super rough go trying new tech's

Part one of howdah is done time to spray the other half.

Wow, I'm a complete left hander. About all I do with my right is eat; fork in left hand, knife in right.

For those double posting, just edit your post instead of double posting..

I wouldn't say more runny... I guess when you water it down. But an ink is literally designed to dig deep, while a wash is designed to spread more and stain a whole area. Its extra chemicals added to give the properties.

My first work is now getting close to finished. Just have annoying detail bits to go which are taking a while, and need to complete the base which I am really not happy with at the moment.

Thanks strew, well in that case I think I'll go pick up an ink cause thats what I'm looking for.
As an attempt last nite I just watered the wash down about 1:1 and did the rest of my steg and horns.
Just a WIP pic, howdah is still in design phase.

Also took this wash and spread it over alot my original painted mini's when I didn't have a clue an made a world of difference. Devian Mud ftw!

nice looking Steg Eladimir, looks like he's been offroad now, horns are looking great too.

Hell yeah, love the wash range.

Update for my projects: Oxyotl; skin complete, just detailing to do. Chakax; nearly completed construction, need to glue the arms w/Stone Mace on, and those banner looking things on his back.
Steg; tried out a colour scheme on his head of Desert Yellow washed with Devlan Mud, which looked great last night, but this morning in the daylight looks like someone puked on him. Back might try a Bestial brown w/ Devlan mud wash on the spare head to test. either way, was going to drybrush the scales with Rotting Flesh or Khaki.
Also picked up some white spray paint last night (i've always used a brush until now) so the Saurus Warriors are going to get at least a base coat over the weekend. Slow start, gathering momentum now!

Delvan Mud, Badab Black, and Thraka Green. The holy trinity of washes

Anyways, I had hoped to have been able to pick up my miniatures from my mates last weekend but stuff happened and now I'm getting them today. So, hopefully after class or somesuch I'll get some pictures posted.
