I would give the scales a drybrush, with a mix of the 2 greens you have used,
and then a wash of thalks green.

also i would give the hornd and spikes a few washes, starting with black, aound the base of the horns,
then delvin around the bottom 1/3 and finaly sepia around the middle 1/3.
 
I'll go pick up some washes for sure.
But how do you guys wield them? do you thin them or just use em straight out of the pot?
 
mostly, unless I want a thiner wash, then I will add a little water to my pallete.
you can also use a damp brush to blend between washed and unwashed areas.

Ps. you can also use a completely dry brush as an eraser if you are quick enough,
you can fix your mistakes before they dry.
 
New citadel washes are pretty awesome, cause you can use them straight out of the pot

Thanks I'm surprised how well they turned out with just the plain black, highlight of white and two coats of Hard Coat. Esp. after reading the online "How to paint gems" article on GW.
Originally washed the armour scales with black, but tried to drybrush some Mithril Silver on the scales to bring them out a little and found it did nothing much except ruin the wash. So decided to leave it. Could probably do another wash but I've already spent a lot of time on this guy and for a R&F he's really not worth it.

slann is extremley difficult to assmelbe he should be ready to roll by tomorow night the skink is alwmost done Ill post pics tomorow im lazy and need to sleep :O
 
Damn washes,
sounds like the easiest thing but I'm not happy with the results. I'm looking for it to reside in the resses' without largely impacting the previous colour. Is this not possible. I washed my steg which was a dark green with the Devian Mud and it is dark in the recesses but theres a thin layer of black throughout. Is this the normal results or was I suppose to dab it off afterwards?
You need to apply the wash pretty liberally to get enough so it flows into the depths right?

Wash noob here, Luckily I washed the steg where the howdah will rest so not a big dael yet, I'll post a pic later.
 
You might want to try thalka green instead of delvin mud then, it will give you dark green recesses.
and tint your green to ... um green.
 
Good idea, and use the mud on the horns to as 7x7=49 said, Take off the new car shine
 
Apply it directly to the recesses, unless you plan on doing several layers on the skin, then wash the whole thing.
 
Finished my Titan Gladiator (was half painted for 1-2 years on my desk, lol) and Master tormertor is 80% ready, pics coming tomorrow
 
Yeah washes definitely work more like a glaze, they are designed to stain the coat of paint underneath them. Its simply the way they are designed. Which makes them great for some uses, not so good for others. You can try watering it down a bit, then it won't show up as much on the scales and still darken the recesses.

Whats needed to compliment a wash sometimes is an ink, which are designed to pool so while they will still darken the bulk colour a little bit, the majority will flow straight into the gaps and leave the raised areas alone. Given how different they are to washes it is crazy by GW to ditch inks completely, they would have worked well together.

Anyway, the most effective thing now is probably going to be to go over the scales with the lighter green colour again to brighten them up a bit, but keep the lighter colour out of the recesses. You generally have to do that with washes or inks unless you are going for an overall dark look.
 
So an ink is more runny than a wash, so will more so ditch the raised layer and head straight into the crevice?
I tried some washing directly into the crevice which works good but pretty time consuming.
Gonna try washing an area with the Green wash and see if I like the resulting depression and raised area changes. Thanks again all..

I gave mine a semi thick coat not to thick but not to thin, it worked out quite good just dont ad a second wash because you can tell where they overlap and it looks terrible, I usally just stack up a bit of eaxtra wash in the spots I want it before it begins to dry, it it already has and you move some of the wash you will get a bad effect. (I learned the hard way)

Yes, I agree the only way to do it is to use a fine detail brush and carfully put the wash in the gaps (only worthwhile on characters in my opinon) so this looks stunning great job!

It would be nice to have a point update during the week, so it's easier to keep track for everybody. Thats right sevensevenare49, I'm looking at you, don't try to hide behind the mound of miniatures you are trying to paint :D.
 
Yeah a point table update would be cool. Also I think a couple other people promised pictures but haven't seen em yet.
