Blog Warden's Other Paint Log

Thanks! Happy with how the conversions have turned out so far, but I agree that Necron has seen better days.

A bit more progress, basecoating is done for the 10-man kalabite unit and the transport:

Time for some highlights next. Paint was a bit thick for the lighter green, hoping I can fix that too.

I was thinking bone-colored for the weapons and gun pieces, but was concerned they might blend in too much with the skulls. I received the suggestion to make them black instead, maybe with some gold trim, still uncertain as of yet.

Hey I might take you up on that! Send me a PM of what Dark Eldar bits you have lying around so I can take a look, didn't know you collected these guys too!

Cheers all, really looking forward to my Archon conversion from the Fuegan model I have here up next too :D

As always, great project @Warden. Looking forwards to next stage.

They are looking good! Black and Gold might work very good.

The thing is I don't collect them ;) but I needed the Raider as a ship for my High Elf Seaguard (still WIP) :)

I have done a little work this month, mostly assembling my small Deathwatch force, but also put together my new Archon when my miliput showed up.

warden20210605_archon conversion 1.jpg

He is based on the old metal Fuegan model. I gave him a less "shoulders attached to hip bones" look and some new abs:

warden20210612_archon conversion 2.jpg

Now he stands a bit taller too, and has a magnetized banner on his back.

warden20210612_archon conversion 4.jpg

After his basecoat, he is ready to paint.

warden20210616_archon conversion 5.jpg

Work also continues on my kabalite warriors, two of which are nearly complete. Still need to do the eyes and gems and some cleanup work, plus base.

I am SUPER excited about how my first hovertank is going though! Loved painting the bones.

warden20210626_tank painting 3.jpg

Thats it for now, can't wait to keep painting in all the details!

Great painting @Warden, I particularly like the glass effect on the vehicles driver area. Really nice work!

Great job on the painting:artist::artist:

I love the vibrant colors and the contrast between them.
Keep up this great work.

I am really enjoying these colors. My first four eldar/deldar are complete, starting with my two test kabalites:

warden20210627_eldar painting 4.jpg

warden20210627_eldar painting 7.jpg

I really like the purple. Through this process I was able to learn how to make really tiny highlights of pink that did not overwhelm the purple underneath.

The two hangers-on are also complete, good practice for the rest of the wyches (and other tanks):

Next up is the rest of the infantry and finishing that hovertank! I am also a big fan of the windshield, that was fun and it turned out better than expected :D

This is a great paint scheme, really tight painting and contrasts. Nice one!

Yet another sidestep project... some Deathwatch space marines!

They are certainly a nice contrast from the eldar I have been painting.

The "good" WIP: :cool::artist:

warden20210701_deathwatch lieutenant WIP 01.jpg

I got a bunch more assembled, and several are magnetized for different options.
warden20210701_deathwatch lieutenant WIP 02.jpg

warden20210701_deathwatch lieutenant WIP 03.jpg

Aside from his spear, this Lieutenant also has a pistol option to go with his stormshield

warden20210701_deathwatch lieutenant WIP 04.jpg
warden20210701_deathwatch lieutenant WIP 05.jpg

Sadly the first test marine did NOT go so smoothly, quite literally he had paint flecks in the primer layer.

The bad WIP: :meh::grumpy::argh::banghead:

warden20210628_deathwatch testmarine_01.jpg
warden20210628_deathwatch testmarine_02.jpg

The flecks in the primer caused an incredibly uneven finish. Looks even worse on camera, especially the plasmagun.

Based on some internet research this was caused by 1) priming too far away from the model with the rattlecan, and/or 2) high humidity during spraying on the primer. Either case causes the paint to dry in mid air prior to even touching the model, causing major residue building on the plastic.

So this means several of my newly-constructed marines need to be stripped after only the primer layer! My workaround is pinsol; I have already stripped this guy after only an hour of soaking, and a toothbrush under hot water. Turns out it didn't mess with the plastic detail like I was afraid of, but I will show pictures once he is repainted and less grainy!

The more you learn... :banghead::bookworm::vulcan:

The Lieutenant looks great already! Deathwatch has been one of my favourite parts of Space Marine fluff, I love the idea of all the chapters mixing their best of the best.

Shame about the primer... but at your painting standards, the fact that you're still learning scares the bejeezus out of me!

Thanks! I think I can still make my disaster turn out ok.

Considering how much lore there is about space marines out there, it just so happens there are a lot of chapters that I find really cool that could make a neat army to paint and collect. Black Templars were my first love of course, so they will feature, but there are also the Flesh Eaters awesome red color scheme, the Iron Hands, the Sons of Medusa, the Yellowjackets, Angels of Vengeance, Dark Angels, the list can keep going.

The Deathwatch are going to be a great excuse to do some of the chapters I find the most interesting :D

Finished my first marine in over a decade: Lieutenant Scipio of the Iron Snakes!

I don't have my transfers here yet, but I am super happy with how well the freehand on his shoulderpad turned out!

Edit: after looking at these pictures I realize I took them before I repainted the baserim :banghead:

In any case, I will probably go back and add a bit more brown drybrushing to the bottom of his shield, make it blend into the environment some more.

Now that you mention it, they did turn out quite synthwave/cyberpunk. Quite a happy coincidence!

Great paint jobs! I love the freehand.

Poor necrons... they never end well with you. :p

Nope! :D

I have four lychguard/praetorians assembled to make a small kill team, but really I only bought the kit for the extra weapons bits for the deathwatch to use :cool:

Although those new war-of-the-worlds-esque construct-walkers the necrons have now are super cool looking... :peeking::peeking::cyclops::peeking::peeking:

Happy Fourth of July!

My previous test marine is stripped and now repainted, and I am happy with the results: Brother Tex of the Stars of Dorn

warden20210703_deathwatch_stars of dorn 01.jpg

For those of you who have never heard of the Stars of Dorn space marine chapter, please read the heretically hilarious bit of parody that is contained here and here.

Indeed!
Well, i like almost all the necrons line, but i play them so i'm certainly biased.

Makes sense! :D

Did your opinions of the necrons change much after their lore made the transition from just 40Ks Terminator robots to the more Egyptians-in-space lore they have now?

I can only imagine how insane it would be to edge highlight a ghost ark :eek:

I liked them in both ways, to be honest. THe egyptian theme was already there.
